Interesting story- A composer named Bae Soojeong who worked in JYP's A&R team with many artists said the album she's most satisfied with making was TWICE's debut album. She said while making TWICE's music, the goal was to target female fans, so Like Ooh Ahh was made. (+)
But when LOA released it ranked #99 on Melon, so she thought 'ah I screwed up' while going to Europe for vacation bc she didn't want to be in Korea. But when she came back, she got notifed right away and saw that LOA rose to #11 on Melon (so it was a huge success after all)
This is from an interview that was released today. She also said that TWICE had a lot of expectation from the public after Sixteen so she felt it would be all her fault if things went wrong. (and it didn't, it became a historic album)

Look at popular girl groups in the west. Destiny's Child, TLC, Salt-N-Pepa, Spice Girls, Fifth Harmony, Little Mix, etc. Sonically, stylistically, and conceptually the kpop equivalent would be girl crush, slutpop, and other "strong concepts." There isn't really a popular Western equivalent outside of Radio Disney stuff back in the 2000s.
Blackpink had the best chance of making it (having English speakers helps) but under their current manner of releasing stuff it's not going to happen anytime soon
