Is he the greatest bassist of all time?

maybe but his vocals were not good
No.
no that goes to jaco pastorius
or tony levin
You take that the fuck back you hoser
Nope. Pino Palladino or maybe victor wooten is the actual answer
Close runners up. Jaco played the bass, but he was no bassist - he never supported the song, always made sure he was at the front of it. Levin is a good pick though
In rock probably. Plenty of superior jazz or fusion bassists though.
no, julia is

he's a good bassist, not the best. my personal favorite bassist is les claypool, but same thing applies for him
No.
That's not Scott Lafaro.
That is neither Steve DiGorgio or John Myung.
that's not flee
>writes jade visions
>dies
john paul jones
the one that started it all
no
Les claypool is way better
Geddy is amazing but i gotta agree with this user
Jaco could have been
Wooten is literally a meme, go with Marcus Miller or Bromberg if you’re going to choose that path
How is Jaco any different than Wooten? He broke the bass free of the rhythm section, and did all the leg work for later virtuoso players. The instrument takes a different path without him.
Like Jaco, also redefined the dimensions of the instrument while simultaneously innovating its roots.
The real answer is Mingus tho
Geddy Lee knows his way around a fret board.
Fuck YOU!
Geddy Lee's singing is what got me into Rush in the first place. (Well, 70s Rush anyway. Rush lost me after Permanent Waves)
>broke the bass free of the rhythm section
See that's why I make a distinction between a bassist and a player of the bass. I don't disagree that Jaco was an innovative, technically majestic and all around remarkable player. You can always tell when Jaco's on a song. Love that I shot the sheriff cover
Wooten on the other hand is much more of a team player, sonically. His number one priority is being the bassist: filling up the sound at the lower end to accentuate how pretty or jarring the rest of the piece is. It's only when given a chance to break does he whip out all of delightful techniques for maximum showing off in one go. Jaco's style is simply as many techniques as possible at the same time while Wooten is the technique that is perfect for a certain moment, moment to moment
It's cool that pino is undisputed so far lol
I’d make Mike Watt over both Jaco and Pino.
t. bassist of 20+ years
Based.
>Rush lost me after Permanent Waves
Signals and GUP are two of their best albums.
definitely
>literally a meme
sorry you have only heard classical thump
I really like their synth era
And Moving Pictures came after Permanent Waves too. Those first four tracks are certified patrician taste
Chris Squire was, but Geddy's good enough to sub for him at the HoF.
he was one of the best rock bassists in his era, although in my opinion Entwistle was a bit better
"greatest bassist of all time" is a question too silly to even begin answering
I prefer good ol’ Geezer
