Would it be that much of a surprise? Rock was the biggest driving force in popular music for 50 years, being dominant in the entirety of the whole concept of "pop" music.

It still is dominant. Look at the charts. Nothing has beaten it, no matter how hard you try.

i honestly don't think this album was great. at points i was cringing at how off-kilter it was.

I would say that currently rap and "singer-songwriter", however vague of a genre that is, is more dominant at the moment. Ironically though, whenever a hiphop artist wants to be experimental, they make use of elements such as distorted bass, drums, screamed vocals, all of which are tightly connected to rock-music.
