>always hear about nu-metal, but never actually listen to it
>from my understanding most people just go through a phase of enjoying it as young teens and then either stop listening to metal entirely or go on to listen to better metal
>decide “fuck it, I might as well check this out just to hear how it sounds”
>really really really really love it
>it’s literally all I listen to now
Th-this is normal right? Of course I’m not the only one liking nu-metal in my twenties haha

Im a metalhead but I like some numetal too. It's not all shit, there's some okay ones.
No bro you should definitely be listening to the faggy poptimist shit and latest indie band #302 in addition to the freshest woke rap mixtape Nu metal fucking sucks and is cringe.
listen to koi no yokan, definitely my favourite deftones album, the shoegaze elements mixed with the nu metal ends up so good
Yes, it's normal. I've never stopped liking nu metal although I do like a fair bit of 'real' metal too.
this album is great OP, i dont think deftones exactly fit the nu metal label but i get it
Around the Fur is as orthodox nu metal as you'll get.
first band as a kid was rammstein neighbor introduced me, than in middle school was really into nu-metal
In high school was into post-punk all kinds of music turned Yas Forums basically
Now i like all kinds of metal, black metal and industrial being my fav
Not sure what is nu-metal today, korn has a new record and slipknot i dunno
the best Deftones record, good taste
I don't understand why deftones is "nu-metal". It seems like this category is just used for any metal released between about 1998 and 2005 that didn't follow the traditional "metal" formula or wasn't black metal or grindcore.
It's not a phase everyone goes through. I loved through the era and hated it. I listened to 90/00 metalcore that numetal borrowed a lot of sounds from. I thought it sucked, especially with the vocals and lyrics.
It's very strange to see zoomers getting into numeral like it was ever cool. It was not.
I suggest disembodied instead
Nu metal is an outgrowth of alternative and groove metal characterised by heavy downtuned groove-based guitar and a focus on rhythm over conventional guitar-led rock/metal. Deftones along with Korn are actually the archetypes for the genre, but you can still hear the groove-based approach in later and more commercial bands like Linkin Park and Disturbed.
People don't like to include Deftones because it offends their sensibilities to associate an 'arty' band with a 'poisoned' genre category like nu metal but on their first three albums especially they closely share a sound with Korn, right down to the subtle gothic/post-punk touches.
I’m not a big deftones fan in general, but Around the Fur is a fluke masterpiece and is actually the best rock album of the 1990s. It’s better than anything by Radiohead, NMH, MBV, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.
Based and good taste but I disagree a out it being a fluke, it was simply the peak of their original “raw” sound and its a great record from start to finish. White Pony is a great evolution into a more commercially friendly sound but it doesnt hit hard from start to finish the way ATF does.
If you ask me, Id say their darker, more ambient sound peaked on Saturday Night Wrist, and that was the highest peak they’ve had since, though every subsequent record since then has been HEAVILY influenced by the sound they refined with that record. ATF and SNW are, for me, their only two front-to-back complete masterworks
>It’s better than anything by ... Nirvana ...
no it isn't
deftones and shoegaze are shit. the only decent nu-metal band is system of a down
Just about any album is better than anything by Nirvana, user
pfffffff
nope
Cope
Deftones arent bad but I still haven’t listened to them in over a decade.
nu-metal along with pop-punk paved the way for emo which was truly the absolute cancer that killed rock music.
Post-grunge killed rock, retard.
wtf is post-grunge?
it's like post-punk but for grunge. it's really cool
I never listened to Deftones because of that Back to School song, I hate it so much I never bothered.
If it makes you feel any better the band hates it too and it only exists to give White Pony an Around The Fur-type edge
I wouldn’t really consider Deftones nu-Metal
>SOAD
>nu-metal
based retard
im pretty loose with what i call nu-metal. i call tool nu-metal
Back to School was forced by the record label because they thought that the band didn't write a "commercial" enough song for White Pony.
>Vocalist Chino Moreno has said, "This album right here [the White Pony re-release] is not the album that we turned in to the label. As far as we're concerned, the first edition was the record. Done. Then, they talked us into re-releasing it with another song on it, and it's not like I'm against the song or whatever, but I liked the sequence we had when we first turned it in. When this version came out, a little part inside all of us felt like: 'Fuck! We just totally compromised.' And I know that a lot of our fans felt bad about it too."
>The band also specifically regretted the presence of "Back to School" on the re-release of the album, as Moreno stated in an interview with German rock magazine Visions: "'Back to School' was a mistake. A calculated song, that had been built up with only one aim in mind: It should be a single. ... 'Back to School' was released because I was an idiot. I wanted to prove something [to the record company]. Months later, after White Pony was released, they wanted us to do a new version of "Pink Maggit". They said we lost our heaviness, and there were no more singles on the album. First, I wanted to stick this idea up my ass, but then I thought: 'I'm gonna show those fuckers how easy it is to create a hit-single.' And so I rapped a hip hop part on that song, we shortened it and half an hour later, the hit-single was ready to roll on."
