They’re somewhat hard to get into depending on your taste and where you’re coming from. It’s not like other bands where you’re listening to studio albums as being the best representations of the band’s art. With the Dead the goal is to familiarize yourself with their songs and then go listen to their live shows and hear how a particular song played out on a given show or how a particular set played out. It’s extremely rewarding because once you get a handle on some of the songs you can start to pick out legendary versions of those songs. There’s a lot of fun debates over what a best version of a particular song is. That’s where the real magic of the Dead is, live shows, comparing different versions of songs and discussing them.

I would start with like American Beauty. Then figure out which song on it is your favorite and do some research online about the best versions and listen to a few of those. Then when you hear a good version of that song maybe listen to the entire show and see if you like other songs and do the same thing for those songs. It’s involved but it’s extremely rewarding. They are on another level.

In other words... they're shit and probably THE most overrated band in the history of modern music.

Start by not shaving or showering for a month.

Europe 72 is a widely available excellent live Dead album that I think would be a great starting point for listening

The basics
>"Studio" stuff:
American Beauty/Workingman's, Anthem of the Sun
>"Live" stuff
Europe '72, Reckoning
>Archival releases (aka starting to get into the real heady shit)

please tell us your favorite bands

Avoid Jerry Garcia’s solo work at all costs

Wrong, listen to "The Wheel".

A decent amount of Garcia's solo stuff became canonized as classics performed by the Dead "The Wheel", "Loser", "Reuben and Cherise", "Sugaree", "To Lay Me Down", "The Wheel", "They Love Each Other", "Mission In The Rain", "Bird Song", "It Must Have Been the Roses", etc.

Radiohead, Death Grips and like Playboi Carti

grateful dead will always be more important than those memes because their cult is a true cult and passes down the appreciation like a family does. does anybody share image macros of socially awkward penguin anymore? same thing will happen with
>Radiohead, Death Grips and like Playboi Carti
