Mixing is as much a creative process as anything else in music making, and requires subjectivity and context to understand what the mixing engineer or artist is going for.

If you throw around the phrase "the mixing is bad" without demonstrating you even tried to comprehend what mixing actually is or what about the mixing sounds bad to you, you just sound like a pretentious tool and a retard to everyone who actually knows how the sausage gets made.

I kind of agree. Hard to speak in objective terms when it comes to music criticism, but the closest thing to that would be maybe the mix doesn't go for what it intended.

That said, if you feel like the mix is objectively bad, you better explain why. Often times, people confuse some parts of composition with mixing, or they want to say something is bad without really understanding why.

Just to be a contrarian, I'll say that you can detect bad mixing even if you don't have the knowledge or ear training to understand articulate the cause or exactly what's going on.

For example, too much low end, too heavily mixed-in reverb or reverb tails, and certain elements with overlapping frequency spectrums and levels can all create a general impression of muddiness or murkiness, but an average listener may not necessarily be able to say why exactly it sounds muddy/murky to them.

Also, poor mixing can make something sound fine in stereo but bad in mono. Someone can say "the mix sounds like shit in mono" without knowing any of the technical details.

I'm not really making this comment because of one case. Check any amateur review or RYM comment box and there's probably someone who just bluntly says "the mixing kills this" or something to that effect.

For the sake of argument, let's take Thundercat's latest album. The percussion mixing is intentionally flat. On this album more than others, they're trying to go for prime Herbie Hancock. FlyLo usually does the mixing and production for his albums, and while some people criticize how some of his albums, like Cosmogramma, are mixed he absolutely was trying to go for blown out mix.

Also I'll argue that mixing can be an important factor to what makes something good, a lot of music is good despite the mix. Sometimes a shit mix is part of what makes something good.
