It's important to understand that up until that point no thrash metal album had ever done anything like that before. Two songs was groundbreaking and a very big deal for the genre that no other bands were really doing at the time.

It's not like he couldn't play but I'm impressed people noticed because like 90% of his bass is extremely buried in the mixes, especially on Ride the Lightning.
It's interesting given how much they've mentioned Diamond Head, and bands like Mercyful Fate, who have very prominent bass.

Thing about Cliff iis that he used to write a lot of the music, and the band clearly went downhill after his death, wether this was because of this or for another reason, I don't know. But there clearly is a huge difference in Metallica before and after Cliff.

No. early Slayer is good. Razor is good. Sodom is good. Kreator is good. early Bathory is good. Celtic Frost is good. All fairly popular thrash metal bands and yet so much better than fucking Metallica and Megadeth to anyone who has listened to more than 10 metal albums.

When it comes to ...and Justice for All, I think Metallica themselves said they went too far in the wanting to prove they could play.
The title track you could shorten by two minutes and not lose anything in it because it's just repeating riffs.
And for the black album they went for a simpler approach. Funny thing about the black album, I remember in the documentary they argued that the guitars weren't loud enough, so they boosted them, but they're still not loud enough if you ask me.
