How do I write lyrics as surreal as Jeff's stuff?
How do I write lyrics as surreal as Jeff's stuff?
Be very conscious of what media you consume, and keep extreme note of what you dream about and why/how it means to you.
Write a lot of songs. Eventually your subconscious poetic mind will weave into your art maybe half as well as jeffs did lol
read poetry written after 1960
Do some drugs; be an open minded hippie type; life a slightly strange life that is ever so slightly rustic; hang around open minded people that you can be creative with; and most importantly: exercise your creative mind. Jeff write and recorded batches of songs, some that were never released, while some were worked into later songs, but regardless he didn’t just suddenly have his greatest lyrics. If you’re just starting, give yourself a few years at least.
Do drugs and fantasize about Anne Frank or something
I really don't understand the NMH obsession here. It's just a meme, right? The guy's total musical output is like 20 songs, half of which are sloppy instrumental marching band interludes or noise tracks. What remains are essentially indistinguishable psych folk songs with strummed guitar, off-key vocals, and some horns. It's not horrible, but he's not even one of the better musicians in the Elephant 6 Collective: Kevin Barnes and Robert Schneider are far more talented.

>what you dream about and why/how it means to you.
i wish i could dream, but for the past 5 years it's just like a skipped cutscene, instant teleportation from the night to the morning
wtf is an elephant 6

you probably take too many drugs too often and before sleep
i do not take drugs at all
maybe i should start doing drugs then, but i have no idea how to get anything
Sleep longer and sleep flat on your back, gotta hit that REM sleep.
I wouldn't recommend it, his lyrics are clearly deeply personal expressions (to the point that Aeroplane was, publicly at least, his creative end) and unless you have something you're that passionate about expressing, I honestly think trying to emulate Jeff's style, or at least the level to which his lyrics are dreamlike distortions of deadly serious ideas (existentialism, innocence, molestation, etc.), is not going to work for you.
read vivid childrens books
sometimes trauma will prevent dreams
you are a little shit
Well that's most of my training then
Next I'd recommend setting alarms at random points in the night so you can catch a dream as you wake up from one. You're having them, you're juts not remembering them
Just being honest cunt, try to write lyrics as surreal as Jeff's and you probably end up writing like Justin Vernon, might mean a lot to you but fuck all to anyone else. Cultivate your own style OP.
Jeff was the most skilled songwriter, even technically, and he's the only one of them who has successfully elicited an emotional reaction from anyone, besides the one Music Tapes album where he's aping Jeff anyways.
I have massive respect for OTC, Of Montreal, the Apples, the Music Tapes. There's a lot to learn from all of them, but what the other E6 guys have over Jeff Mangum amounts to a pile of production parlor tricks.
i'd love a neutral milk hotel with sonic landscapes of the olivia tremor control album
With Bill Doss dead and Jeff Mangum spending his time doing ARGs for albums that don't exist, maybe it's better to let dreams die. Else you get as bitter towards your heroes as me.
Justin vernon is ok but way more salty than mangum
>The guy's total musical output is like 20 songs, half of which are sloppy instrumental marching band interludes or noise tracks
and he's still the greatest of the last 30 years
and your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
And your dad would dream of all the different ways to diiiiiie
Eat strange things.
gay

OH WHERE ARE YOU
WHERE ARE YOU JEWISH GIRL
OH WHERE ARE YOU
ATTIC GIRL
THE KHAZAR BULBS
THE FLOWERY TULIP
I CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU
YOU MAKE ME PONDER
TO SAIL ON A WAVE OF HOPE
TO REACH THE SHORE OF THE BATH
IN WHICH I LAY
LAY DOWN
OH I SHALL LAMENT
THIS HOLY DAY
OH OH OH
*BANJO SOLO*
OOOOOHHHHHHHH LIFE

OOOOH LIFFEEEE
*HARMONICA*
DUUDUUDUUDUU
fucking rubbish
Not to "uh ahkshually" but there's about a decade's worth of NMH material
This. You can never live the experiences that lead Jeff to write in the way he does, so don't bother trying.
>*HARMONICA*
I think you mean singing saw
