Literally what's the point of free jazz?
Literally what's the point of free jazz?
For people to go "oh yes! Yes! This sounds good" but it doesn't.
to push jazz to its limits. Make somthing that only a few elite can actually comprehend and leaves the rest of us thinking "what the fuck did I just listen to"
The same as any other kind of music.
Every great free jazz album needs multiple versions of the same song. All of the good ones do it.
It's because what you hear as random chaos is actually somewhat thought out. The fun part is digging through the chaos and figuring out what the foundation or theme is.
Check out both versions of Ghosts by Albert Ayler to maybe know what I'm talking about.
Emotion and expression without the constraints of structure
>no structure
Low IQ answer
Not all free jazz has a foundation or theme. Some of it really is just chaos, though it's impossible for humans to be truly random when they play.
I think thanks to its "free" nature it touches some emotional chords that other types of music don't
Same as any other kind of music. There is no point.
there is a point. it makes you forget about dying. that's all entertainment is - a pacification device. if people fully comprehended sentience, society would implode, man. just expand your mind.
How about you expand your mouth instead and let this dick rest.
What are you talking about? I just said humans can't play randomly. Never said anything about whether that's a good or bad thing.
for me it’s about wrapping my brain around different kinds of sounds n structures or whatever
same appeal as autechre
it doesn’t give ya a lot of dopamine and is def pretentious but I’m glad it exists bc regular music gets boring sometimes
Jazz is the ultimate pleb filter
It's such a filter this board barely talks about it
non.
i want a coffie with some nice eating like that :(
It gives me a lot of dopamine. Haazz and company is great, same with Brotzmann octet’s machine gun. It gives me something to attach to emotionally
I think y'all are forgetting one album...
>Literally what's the point of free jazz?
It's free music
you cannot have genuine expression without structure
trolling. pranking. ya know that kinda shit.
it is for repeated listens, putting chaos in the context of art means that you have to essentially create your own art through interpretation
the focus on improvisation creates this organic, free-flowing aspect that makes the music very immersive and surprising, especially when the players really come together
well thats kind of a self contradiction now, isnt it? its impossible for humans to be truly random so no free jazz can be just chaos. theres always a foundation, even if its a subconscious one
So that poor people can have access to it
op - just listen to the narrators in the first 10 minutes of ken burns jazz doc , 1st episode
It's for bored coked up musicians. Consider what they would've produced if meth had been widespread.
I meant foundation as in some kind of consciously chosen thematic element. I agree there's always a subconscious foundation though. Every musician has their own style after all.
>Every great free jazz album needs multiple versions of the same song
don't follow this idiot neofite's advice, numerous "takes" on the same title isn't by any means a norm in free jazz, just a peculiarity he's caught on the couple records he's listened to (I'm guessing Unity because he namedropped but other than that, alternate takes seem limited to bonus tracks in some reissues of free jazz classics i.e. the obligated Machine Gun)
I disagree. For me free jazz is perfect music to just "sound good" with no point or objective. It's just happening, it makes me feel good, but I don't have to focus on it going a certain place, and there's usually no vocals, which is nice.
>It's just happening
the universe in a nutshell. Free will proponents GET FUCKED
It has the chaos and energy of harsh noise but without the earbleading and headache, thats why I like it
