Does this not sound like a man filled with jealousy? The lyrics are about Kurt. Dave always wanted to be the frontman of his own band. He resented being the shy, quiet one, confined to the back of the stage at gigs, going unrecognized even by Nirvana fans to the extent that he could walk around outside the venue and no one would notice him. He knew that Kurt knew this. There was a lot of resentment there.
Personally I feel that there was some kind of deal here. Dave and Courtney both had an interest in Kurt's being killed. I don't think Krist was involved or even aware. Dave was always going to end up founding his own band, even if Kurt lived. But a tragedy gave him a new spotlight. Suddenly, he was the #1.

If you really think about it I don’t blame Dave at all, what he did was smart as fuck. He’d either be making pennies off $2000 never mind Walmart checks split with miss love OR start his own band where he himself is the sole song writer and collects all the royalties. Seems like a genius move to me
