Self destructive musicians are an eternal thing, but in the 90s they were edgy and marketable, to a youth that saw the inevitable march towards globalism and neoliberalism greed is good bullshit for what it really was. Frusciante looks fucking horrifying in that VPRO interview. Hard to believe that he was 23, maybe 24 at the time.

I don't think he ever recovered. Dude seems fucking unhinged in interviews even to this day. I think it is very much possible to abuse drugs so hard, that it fucks you up for life beyond all recognition, even if you do survive and manage to "live your life". Frusciante is that example. Thank fuck he can still play music at least.

The skin grafts weren't done because he wanted to look good, they were literally done to save his life and prevent future infections. He was a fucking ruin by 1997, he should have been dead by that point.

And yeah, most junkies and even ex-junkies will tell you that yeah, it is worth all that shit. Most of those people are one bad week away from crawling down that hole.
