Why were 90s rockstars so utterly self-destructive and disinterested in whether they lived or died?
>Kurt Cobain
>Layne Staley
>John Frusciante
>Richey Edwards
>Trent Reznor
>Mark Lanegan
>Peter Steele
>Phil Anselmo

Because being depressed and having a heroin addiction was fashionable and the mark of a "true artist"
cuz it was funny :P
not this shit again
Ronald Reagan and boomers stole their hope
The truth has been posted
1) they usually had fucked up lives / families
2) which led to depression
3) therefore they started using heavy drugs at a young age
4) but they were talented
5) and some of them looked pretty so they were very marketable
6) which gave them the attention they subconsciously wanted and yet didn't want at the same time
7) and the pressure they couldn't take
and Thatcher
Gen X nihilism
homophobia
Bob Dole
Because they were based as fuck. In terms of ethos, the 90s were the most "rock and roll" decade, as well as the most "punk" decade. A total antithesis of modern pussy boy and PC culture. They embodied the spirit of rock music like no other generation. Long live Gen X.
>broken upbringings
>heroin epidemic
>"the end of history"
>lingering mental health issues exacerbated by sudden celebrity
>the shock of going from being a nobody to being all over magazine covers and MTV in a matter of months, if not weeks
>the impossibility of maintaining "alternative" ideals in a corporate enviroment
>tour-related burnout
>conflict of commerce and artistry
Take your pick.

All this. Self destructive musicians are an eternal thing, but in the 90s they were edgy and marketable, to a youth that saw the inevitable march towards globalism and neoliberalism greed is good bullshit for what it really was. Dangerous soulless and destructive. Meanwhile the retard boomer generation vastly outnumbered them and was easily deceived into voting these bastards in while gen x watched in helpless horror.
Nowadays gen x is so quiet. Low numbers and no hope I guess, stuck between two loud bratty and boring generations. I respect them for liking what they like and not being elitist about it like boomers are with their precious 60s rock.
how the fuck did summer of love hippies end up conservative anyway? i get it's an age thing but i still can't understand
Hippies weren't the actual majority of boomers, plus some people lose their idealist young views when they age and settle for 'care for me and my family/fuck everyone else'
>Courtney Love
>rockstar
Frusciante looks fucking horrifying in that VPRO interview. Hard to believe that he was 23, maybe 24 at the time.
It's insane to me that there was a time when you could casually tune into MTV and see a Nine Inch Nails video, or a report on Kurt Cobain's suicide or Frusciante's ever-worsening drug addiction treated like they were major international events.
I don’t understand I do all of these things. I guess I’m a band person

GG
Cranford
Thunders
>his teeth rotted and fell out
>his skin rotted and his arms are still covered in horrific scar tissue after several skin grafts
>his house burned down
>he owed shitloads of money to drug dealers who would have probably thought nothing of blowing his kneecaps off had he not rejoined RHCP and gotten the money to pay them off
>he all but had to re-learn how to talk again after getting replacement teeth and talked with a lisp for years
>he almost certainly had major mental issues which took him years to recover from
Is heroin really worth all this shit?
Remember when rockstars from all decades were also junkies that didn't give a shit about anything?
NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN!
Honestly, I don't know why people post the same fucking threads over and over and over. Fuck you, OP.
theres still tons like that now and in every generation. the self-destructive nature was just a reflection of how generation x felt at the time. they felt that way, so they propped up the definitions of that in kurt cobain and others.
>>he almost certainly had major mental issues which took him years to recover from
I don't think he ever recovered. Dude seems fucking unhinged in interviews even to this day. I think it is very much possible to abuse drugs so hard, that it fucks you up for life beyond all recognition, even if you do survive and manage to "live your life". Frusciante is that example. Thank fuck he can still play music at least.
The skin grafts weren't done because he wanted to look good, they were literally done to save his life and prevent future infections. He was a fucking ruin by 1997, he should have been dead by that point.
And yeah, most junkies and even ex-junkies will tell you that yeah, it is worth all that shit. Most of those people are one bad week away from crawling down that hole.
His vocabulary has gotten very explicitly psychedelic in the last few decades, but he's not a drooling, borderline retarded vegetable like so many other ex-junkies end up becoming. I think a lot of the social awkwardness he's exhibiting was always there, only now that he's not using drugs and alcohol to control it it's more out in the open.
Thats literally every decade ever. Even 50s jazz musicians were heroin addicts
And OP, what does all of them have in common?
That's right, all of them are white.
self-destructiveness was always, and still is, white people shit.

imagine seeing frusciante live on that trainwreck tour he did for smile
simultaneously some of the most depressing and inspiring shit i've ever heard
a former and future A-list rockstar, playing in front of 30 to 80 people a night, having crowd members laughing at him because of how fucked up he is or trying to have intervention sessions at him during a live performance
shit, lads
