100s of metal bands desu

well let's add the condition that the music has to be good

Jimi Hendrix Experience?

Mahavishnu Orchestra

king gizz is the modern equivalent of yes and king crimson

If both were less inventive and even less talented

These madmen

Metallica, Atheist, Deathspell Omega

ELP

I love king gizzard but none of their albums are close to the same level as ctte, fragile, or time and a word imo

First of all relayer is best
King Crimson. Don't try and tell me anyone from Yes is a better guitarist than fripp. Also we had Bruford too.
Mahavishnu Orchestra, as another user has said, are great.
Rick Wakeman is a damn good keyboardist, but c'mon, no one will ever reach the state of keyboard wizardry as Keith Emerson.
Gentle Giant when it comes to multi-instrumentalism and stuff like that. Kerry Minnear is just above Ray Manzarek and below jon lord for rock keyboardists (which would be 4th place).

I don't like either of these but all members of both Dream Theater and Between the Buried and Me are virtuosic at their respective instruments.

Dream Theater.

>we
who are you? Tony Levin?

Gentle Giant

This

The Mars Volta make Yes look simple.

I'd say Wakeman and Emerson are pretty neck-and-neck. I'd give the edge to Emerson if you forced me to choose, but Wakeman could do some absolutely wild stuff. I'm a keyboardist and I've spent some time learning pieces from both of them and they're a similar level of difficulty.

Jazz bands that play rock music will always outmatch rock bands playing rock music. Yes is the closest a rock band will ever get

>name any band that rivals Yes in terms of technical ability
Basically any well-established classical ensemble

>No mention of Rush yet
Damn, Yas Forums. Come on.

>never listened to avant-prog
you are like a little baby, listen to this

t. doesn't listen to classical

name a classical band

Extremely likely that I've been listening to classical longer than you have. OP didn't ask for classical musicians, he asked for bands.

And?

The New York Philharmonic is a band.

>only plays covers

Yes, so? It still suits OP's criteria.

Isn't that Zeuhl not avant-prog? I know the genres are related but...

composition is a technical skill

no

It's mostly a knowledge. It isn't even a skill. Not saying that composition is meaningless, but correcting bad semantics

Cardiacs

zeuhl is just a specific style of avant-prog. same shit different toilet

-Deep Purple, esp. in it's late stages with Steve Morse
-King Crimson
-Dixie Dregs
-not really a fan but, Dream Theater
-Chicken Foot
-almost any Japanese Metal-Pop or Metal Anime band, esp. the ones with Chris Impellitteri
-almost any shredder nostalgia band: Mr. Big, Winery Dogs, G3 tour bands.
-any band that Jeff Beck decides to tour with
and believe it or not,
-probably even the Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band shit b/c all the support musicians trying to make Ringo look good and b/c Steve Lukather still has his chops.

>classical band
What, you mean string quarter groups? Do you consider orchestras "bands"?

>Do you consider orchestras "bands"?
Strictly speaking, they are.
