Cobain became important because music journalists told us Nirvana was important. In reality, most people didn't know a thing about Nirvana and couldn't tell whether a song they were hearing on the radio were Nirvana or Soundgarden or Pearl Jam. They just didn't care, and Kurt wasn't as big a deal as you think he was.
