Why do people not make serious music anymore? Everything these days is ironic, or post-ironic or whatever dumb shit it is these days. Every song involves memes, cringey internet references, and dumb tiktok dances and trends. What happened to serious music? Where are the people making music that is thoughtful, or dark, or that tries to make a statement beyond just "dude le dank memes lol"?

Have you listened to the new Fiona Apple album? You know, the one that got a 10 from Pitchfork?
are you retarded?
Try this.

I did, I liked it, but what's with the weird twee indie thing she's going for these days? I preferred Fiona Apple's 90s albums.
What the fuck are you talking about?
Streaming. Music became legally free thus making it totally worthless and it lost all value.
You can't see what I mean? Look at all the music that's being made these days. I mean pop and hip hop have totally abandoned all seriousness in favor of just making tiktok anthems now. The most popular modern artists on Yas Forums are all these cringey shits like Death Grips or King Gizzard that build their whole aesthetic around "memes" and internet culture. I just find it so exhausting. Why are people not writing music about real life experiences anymore? Why does everything have to be coated with 10 layers of irony?
youve clearly never actually listened to dg if you think their music involves memes or irony at all. youre conflating the fanbase with the music.
the same is probably true for king gizz but ive never listened to them
Replace those bands with 100 Gecs and Playboi Carti as they never used meme references ever. I do agree tho
>youve clearly never actually listened to dg if you think their music involves memes or irony at all.
I actually listened to them very regularly for many years and followed their new releases. But eventually I woke up one day and had an epiphany: I don't want to be involved in encouraging fucking "meme music" to be a thing. So I stopped listening to them.
Honestly sometimes I wish I could travel back in time and kill the guy who invented the internet. It's a beast which has destroyed any semblance of culture and art, and has buried everything in all these layers of irony and bullshit.
>filtered by King Gizzard and Death Grips
King Gizzard have never used memes in their songs. Their fanbase is usually on the younger side and they make memes but the music itself has nothing to do with memes
Their whole aesthetic is clearly built around "internet culture" and marketing themselves as an "internet band" for young Gen Z kids. Even if their songs don't reference it, their whole vibe is permeated with this feeling of "weeee le wacky irony and meems peepeepoopoo kek" that you can just feel in every single song. It was the same with Death Grips.
You have Zoomer Derangement Syndrome man.
If you hate the internet so much, stop using it.
King Guzzard are exemplary pomo fucktards.
Thank god for the coming Great Depression. Noone will have the gusto for irony anymore. Get ready for the unironic return of party hymns, military marches and torch singers.
What?
There's nothing else to do, we're in quarantine.
>Thank god for the coming Great Depression. Noone will have the gusto for irony anymore.
Sounds fucking great, genuinely. If the 2020s ends up becoming a decade of serious, dark, profound music once again, then it will all have been worth it.
I used to think the same way as this guy, it's probably not bait.
>used to
Why did you stop?
It's not hating the internet, it's hating what it's become. It's much worse. It's seeing something you love turn into something horrible.
OP here, idk if I agree with you. As a kid I used to love the internet, but looking back on it, it was always awful. The seeds for the post-irony and cringey bullshit of the 2010s were all planted in the mid-to-late 2000s. There were no glory years of the internet.
The most interesting and positive thing about the internet is that it has now lasted long enough to be a historical record for years gone by. I enjoy to look back at old forums from the late 90s, to see what people were saying about the music that was coming out then, when it was coming out. That's also quite fun because back in those days, people spoke on forums like they were normal human beings. There was no equivalent of memes or soijaks or some faggot replying to everything with "based".
The seeds were there maybe, but the problem is they were watered. Or maybe a better analogy is that there were some weeds and they've become overgrown, no one cares enough to be a good gardener or take care of the garden.
Totally agree about old forums. It's weird to think, but I actually think this place is one of the more genuine spaces on the internet, compared to shit like reddit. I never would have thought that 10 years ago, but places with actual discussion are so rare nowadays.
youre a braindead faggot who lets his taste in music be dictated by what imaginary stereotypes listen to
if you say "there's no X music now, what happing" you're a lazy retard who's not willing to take the time to search for shit that fits his preference and would rather needlessly complain
>hurrrrrr you dont like le epic dank memes and zoomzoom fortnite culture? well that means youre le rong generation faget! lol kek kek peepeepoopoo i love le death grips
Kill yourself.
Naw dude, I listen to the music I want to listen to. I'm just old enough to also get joy from yelling at kids to get off my lawn.
maybe you would like metal
you could be spending that time immersing yourself in some good tunes, old man.
I see your point though, shit like 100 gecs and black dresses is harmful to the culture.
Is his point that complaining about "wrong generation" people is way more obnoxious than the wrong generation kids themselves? Cause that's what I'm getting from this.
This is absolutely not a more genuine place, just because there aren't upboats here doesn't mean there isn't a pressure at work, to be more edgy and negative and nihilistic and apathetic and oh so ironic. Don't be deluded into thinking that Yas Forums is any closer to reality than reddit.
It's definitely still removed from reality. That's what I meant when I said I wouldn't have called this place genuine way back when. But the pressures are kept in line by the structure. Things are just more open because there are no repercussions. If this place is 2-3 steps away from reality, reddit (or instagram, or tik-tok, whatever) are both more removed, and have the added downside of impacting reality because there is a record or connection to what happens online (people remember you, like you, follow you, etc). Because Yas Forums is removed from that level it can be extreme, but the extremity doesn't have the same context.
i bet this guy is like 27 and thinks hes wisened and above it all
Not OP, but you're close. Not above it all, just flinging shit from a different angle.
