Why do you lads give a fuck about music critics? I don't get it. I understood the concept in the pre-internet era, when a new abum was a significant enough financial investment that you'd like at least a vague idea if it wasn't total shit, so you'd buy a magazine or watch a tv show or whatever. But why now? That new Fiona Apple album this board is shitted up with is on youtube, if you want to listen to it, there you go. Even if you pay for an album its cheap, so why do you care what some bald onions fuck thinks of it instead of having your own opinion? Just listening to and making up your own mind. You don't have to be told what to like do you? Don't you guys have the opposite opinion to any critics? Isn't music taste entirely subjective?

I like my opinion to be reinforced

kids today are so worried about not having the correct opinion on shit it's insane. I don't want to rattle on forever like old man yells at cloud, but they can't form their own opinion for fear of being "wrong" and getting excluded from shit; they're on a hivemind the likes of which we've never seen.

I used to post on another board for over 10 years and no one on there ever brought up critics. On the other hand most of the music discussed was stuff the critics dont like or ignore so it wouldnt make much sense to bring them up.

tbqh i only use music critics to either discover new music, to listen to old stuff that I still don't know, or to choose an album to start with when the discography is too long

Yas Forums is a very self-conscious and trend oriented board, heaven forbid you have the wrong opinion or you're on the 'wrong side of history'... what if your grandkids think you were uncool and not, like, totally progressive and stuff?

Has to do with the fact most active posters here are high school age and haven't yet formed a consistent personality. They're still searching for personal blueprints

Joker is one of the worst movies of 2019.

Go away

what music critics? i cant name any, and i doubt anyone hear listens to them.

It was the only good one

It's funny to see you complain about soiboys when you posted a pic of the Joker.

>'one of the worst movies of 2019'
>he watched more than one

we

The joker isn't really a soiboy, he's a different type of loser

I had high hopes for it because I love Joaquin Phoenix, but it was pretty boring.
I should've figured it would suck since it's set in a superhero universe. My fault I guess.

stop talking about "the joker" as though it's something worth understanding

impressionable kids just trying to fit in but with the added fear of being cancelled for having an “incorrect“ opinion.

I honestly put more stock in random anons recommendations or some random chart I see on Yas Forums than I do in any critics opinion.

This guy has a good point

My opinion is that literally everyone, to some degree, listens to the music they do in order to impress someone else. Even if that means that they listen to it BECAUSE they know no one else does so they can have that status.

Myself, I use music critics in order to learn about new music. If someone whose opinion I respect say they liked an album, that gives me a reason to decide to give that one a shot over another. I could be listening to anything at any time, and social pressures play a pretty big factor in determining which I give my time to. No one forms their opinion in a vacuum as much as they'd like to

No offense, but that's the most retarded opinion I've ever read.

>Myself, I use music critics in order to learn about new music. If someone whose opinion I respect say they liked an album, that gives me a reason to decide to give that one a shot over another.
This is by far the most useful thing a music critic can do for you

Why do you think so? I bet a great deal of the regulars on this very board listen to music for the purpose of discussing it here, and avoid music that they are unable to discuss here.

this is such a shit take, literally no one knows about my music taste apart from this anonymous board, i'm not trying to impress anybody with ambient techno lol

i wholeheartedly agree with OP, never read a scaruffi review and only watched like 5 fagtano videos back then

If you are listening to music for the sole purpose of discussing it then you are missing the point of music in general.

So, KPop and other idol culture forms of music then?

You act like he doesn't know this. Your comprehension/logic is kinda shit - you're pulling a lot of assumptions from what this guy is saying.

Yeah this, you're reading his exposition of a potential viewpoint as his own viewpoint

>My opinion is that literally everyone, to some degree, listens to the music they do in order to impress someone else.

He wrote:
>My opinion is that literally everyone, to some degree, listens to the music they do in order to impress someone else.

How can you agree with this statement?
It is teenage logic.

You're proving me right with this very post, you say yourself no one knows *except for this board*. This board is clearly influential towards your music taste, and while it may not be "music critics" its fellow music fans that are determining what you listen to. This isn't bad by the way

I will say that music isn't listened to for the sole purpose of discussion, but rather that discussion and perceived status is what drives the music-listening choices you make.

Scaruffi is actually an incredible source on music in general if you want to find something new. You can totally disregard the actual content of his reviews and just consult the extensive lists of albums for your own purposes.

when I was 15 and first browsing here I wanted other anons to approve of my music taste and I think that's how most anons are until they're old/mature enough to realize that there is no objective good taste and start listening to things that actually resonate with them

Yeah and he's clearly a teenager. He's writing hyperbolically - "literally everyone" - but maybe that everyone encompasses all of the people he knows in his teenage circle.

I happen to be older and introverted so I listen to music for my own purposes, this doesn't apply to me. But if music subcultures leading into the 2000s and contemporary social media trends have taught us anything it's that teenagers project their part of their understanding of the world to others through their choice of consumed media.

What is meme culture if not a subliminal acknowledgement that those who enjoy the meme all understand the same subtext?

Well said, I can't really argue with that, I listened to some garbage as a kid just because it was popular among my friends.

Maybe I'm too old to post here.

yeah, maybe I am too

1000 albums 12 years of Yas Forums never listened to one music critic not even once

I like to hear opinion on albums I listened to.
Wouldn't Really change my opinion on it, I just like to hear what others have to say.

I wasn't replying to that post. Stop being a dipshit

I'm just wondering, where did the music you listen to now come from? If it's new music, where did you learn about it? If it's older, is it stuff you discovered when you were younger and more susceptible to these sorts of forces?

(I'm writing an essay on this topic and am looking to strengthen my argument)
