While I don’t condone violence. You have to remember the primary purpose of gangster rap was to tell the story the urban black male and what “the system” had made him.

It’s almost like Frankenstein monster situation. A racial profiling, white supremacist Dr Frakenstein has unknowingly created a “monster” through his unethical and unjust practises. Even members of the black community that weren’t violent gangsters or drug addicts were touched by violence. People will react to the environment they’re in and gangster rap is the product of the environment. No one outside the black community was really aware of the violence, drugs, and racial profiling at that time. Gangster rap gave that community a voice. Sure they do use lines of killing, looting, and shooting but that’s a lot of exaggeration to get a point across.

If you look at some 90s rappers like Tupac you’ll find some songs with a lot of self reflection about the struggles of growing up with an addict mother and how he doesn’t actually wanna fight with his fellow black men and how black people killing each other is wrong. Check out Changes and Dear Mama by Tupac where he reflects on his life. On Life Goes On he handles death and incarceration and reminisces on the happy parts of his life.
