The truth is the amount of theory you need isnt vast, it's like saying "thou must learn theory to write poetry" no you only need to be literate and then you can start writing, the quality of poetry will vary in the talent one has even though they are drawing from a similar amount of theory. Yes theory is important in music but look at great composers, they all knew pretty much had the same level of theory as did most minor and lesser known composers its what they did with it that counts, Mozart didnt know some secret mode or polyrhythm that Salieri didnt no they had pretty much the same basic knowledge of theory. Collier isnt a composer.

yes, that's the point. theory is the foundation of all music. if you don't use it everything that comes after it is going to fall, but if you use theory alone it's going to be awful. you have to learn theory and then apply whatever the fuck you want on top.
