timeline wise it was still kinda alternative to thrash/glam, but you're right, it's more like gothy hard rock

It's basically just heavy metal, but everybody knew Danzig from his punk background with the Misfits, so because of that association, he was sort of automatically alt-metal - he came from the alternative world.

So is alternative metal just whatever is alternative to the time?

No, alternative was something very specific. Alternative is basically post-post-punk. It's what happened in the late 80s, when bands rooted in the punk movement started doing all sorts of other types of music.

Alt-Metal went mainstream pretty fast. Even during the glam metal era, before grunge hit big, bands like Jane's Addiction were hitting it big.

Grunge was a kind of alternative rock, and a number of bands in that were basically alt-metal, like Alice in Chains. During that era, bands like Rage Against the Machine were also getting big.

Alt-Metal really got huge with Nu Metal (for better or worse), where it was the mainstream rock genre for a minute there.

The first Danzig are hard rock revival, then after blackacidevil, it turns industrial metal (a subset of alternative metal). LP4 already has some electronic shit going on.
Why do you care about music tags?

Alternative is stupid prefix for genres as there's no definition to it. Reach hard enough and you can call most bands or albums alternative-x
As much as metal gets flak for genre autism at least the base genres are clear defined.

yes, it's a crappy non descriptor, like "indie" ignore the post above, Mtv weren't wrapping their heads around "post post punk" they just thought, "this isn't like the metal we're used to, it's now alternative metal"

i meant ignore

Everybody knew what alternative music was, you stupid fuck. It came from a very specific scene.

So a band like Helmet is Post-Post Punk? Cuz I seen them labelled as Alt Metal

I didn't say that, you fucking retard. When I said post-post-punk, I wasn't being literal. I meant it was the next step, after post-punk. It was that lineage, further diversifying. Are you autistic?

Helmet were alt-metal because they were a metal band that had its roots in the NYHC and post-hardcore scenes, alongside bands like Quicksand. They didn't just say "this is alternative metal because it's alternative to Motley Crue," you fucking moron. They called it alt-metal because it was from the alternative scene.

I fucking hate Punk Rock MBA. his takes are fucking terrible for anything metal related

Chill out faggot. Stop mouth breathing like a fucking homosexual and calm the fuck down.

I hate him too, but I actually think his worst stuff is his take on new music. He's completely lost the plot, so he whines about people not appreciating Attack Attack, and praises trap artists like Scarlxrd as the best new thing. It's just another example of an old guy trying to stay relevant by promoting the worst, bleakest shit.

The one saving grace is that he does know his shit on some of the punk stuff from when he was a teenager, like powerviolence. His powerviolence video is one of the best things on that subgenre.

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about and you're being a dismissive little asshole, you retard. Keep crying about people responding to you.

new punk is mumble rap!!1

he's contrarian on purpose and that's fine, but the music he defends sometimes is legitimately shit.
what bothers me the most with him is that he's too square to be a core guy. this music is supposed to be a middle finger to the norm, his advices on how to be a useful little drone who has his shit together are fucking disgusting

also, that episode on alt metal was really superficial

DEVOUREMENT IS WHEN METAL PEAKED!

This is what slamwiggers actually believe.

To their credit, that's pretty much the one genre of extreme metal I've never been able to get into. The gurgly sounds and weird little rumble of the music... I just don't get it. It's like a form of avant-garde that's completely, utterly unstimulating.

It's basically groove metal but for people that think groove metal is for posers (it is).
You're not missing out though, just like groove metal there are less than five good bands, the rest being utterly derivative shit.
War metal is pretty bad too in that regard, I only like titanblood and fallen angel of doom, it puts a smile on my face; true caveman music.

>then after blackacidevil, it turns industrial metal (a subset of alternative metal). LP4 already has some electronic shit going on.
Yeah but to me, that's no different than every older metal band attempting to fit in with the current trends. Slayer tried to go nu metal, Anthrax tried to go grunge, even Motley Crue put out some Nine Inch Nails rip off shit.....but nobody classifies those bands as part of those styles, because everyone knows it was just a bullshit cashgrab and years later not the music they're actually remembered for or what they'd continue making after the trend left, same applies to Danzig.
>Why do you care about music tags?
It's a music discussion board is it not? Are you mad because this is distracting from kpop generals, bait threads, or shitty celebrity gossip threads that make up most of Yas Forums?

I don't think you know what a poseur actually is, like most who throw the word around. A poseur is not simply someone who likes styles you dislike or see as unfashionable, as poseur is someone who is only into something for superficial reasons...in the context of music, typically fashion or social standing. It's someone who poses as a fan but actually isn't, simply enough. You're not a poseur because you like bands who aren't uber underground or bands who fit into a divisive sub genre, despite people wrongfully using the word that way.

This shit is the worst

Does Danzig sound or share lyrical themes with the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Whitesnake etc etc etc? No? Exactly.

yikes

lol fair point, though I do like some war metal just because of how gnarly and fucked up a lot of it is.

when he got rid of his band after the first 4 albums and started making shit music

>Does Danzig sound or share lyrical themes with the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Whitesnake etc etc etc? No? Exactly.
Yes. In fact, you really went through two opposite lyrical aesthetics but Danzig covers both of them. He writes about religion, darkness and mythological/occult stuff and also about girls, sex with girls, and things like being a big bad rocker rebel. His lyrical themes are very typical of classic metal.

As for his sound, like I said it's pretty much just blues based heavy metal. There is really no hardcore punk (ironically enough), alt rock, funk, electronic, etc influence in the original Danzig records. It's all pretty straightforward heavy blues rock/metal riffs and solos. A tad moody, but that's nothing new.

He's 42 years old, it's pretty embarrassing to imagine him listening to music that's embarrassing for actual teens to like. Imagine a 42 year old getting seriously into Good Charlotte or Souljah Boy when they were relevant.
