Any piece of music or genre that is heavily lyric-focused is by definition garbage, as it puts the most importance into a non-musical element and leaves the actual music as something secondary.

lyrics are corny, poetry is corny too, self-absorbed overly-emotional garbage

lyrics ARE poetry but sometimes if they're just right they can fit the song so well but not in excess

the human voice is musical

>I can only appreciate limited aspects of music

This attitude is what left Africans banging sticks while Europeans invented the engine. Effective oral history is important for civilisation bro.

The most important pieces of western music don't have any lyrics though.

Cringe

Africans are all about oral traditions though

Basically all hip-hop except for instrumental hip hop, and Bob Dylan stuff too

Africans are all about oral traditions though almost every if not every african culture has someone specifically dedicated to keep the oral tradition whites are always talking about losing their culture or black culture being prevalent but that's because they don't really have their own at least in america and that all leads back to these oral traditions

buuu istrument noise better than human noise, also last time i heard this it was a 15 years old who just discovered ableton

There isn’t a difference between music and lyrics. We simply just pay attention to relative changes, no matter what it is. If you want music without any of its filler, go listen to MIDI versions of music and pretend to enjoy it. Music is flat and pointless without all the non-musical shit which is most of the context and most of what you’re listening for. Things like volume, inflection, tone, timbre, mixing, song structure, etc. are all literally just noise, but they have more authority than the music itself. Just like all the other is really just noise behind the music itself, lyrics are just another tool of creating relativity.

lyrics are representational whereas pure music is completely abstract

I listen to music for the musical elements myself, but focusing on well-written, insightful lyrics doesn't make a song "garbage." Music can serve many different purposes and can exist for many different reasons. Granted, I don't care about lyrics 90% of the time, but I still think that approach is valid.

What’s music defined as tho? Just the melody? What if you use vocals to sing? What about percussive elements? Hell that excludes even things like volume control to the melody. I mean isnt volume itself representational of ideas of intensity? Also music itself can be highly representational, which is why Harmonic Minor scales sound so classically middle eastern and Arabic.

I think music is greater than the sum of its parts and lyrics are a natural progression. Not saying it’s better or worse, I think it just changes the game

>not understanding that popular music has always been about telling stories and ryhmes.

Just think of nursery rhymes or traditional folk music. Comparing popular music to classical is retarded.

Lyrics are for teens to write down in their diaries and scrape into their arms

lyrics are representational in so far as they intrinsically contain references to external objects/concepts whereas instrumental music codifies ideas and concepts in a non-representational manner

this. popular music is more like folk but for urban people

Irrelevant to the point. This is about music. Not oral history.
You also missed the point.

You also missed the point.
>Things like volume, inflection, tone, timbre, mixing, song structure, etc.
OP's post clearly includes these elements. If he meant just the notes themselves, he would've said just the notes themselves.

The point is it’s arbitrary to call things that are nothing more than noise like reverb or the treble level on a guitar as part of the music, but then to draw the line at the white noise that are lyrics. Clearly lyrics are just another tool than can be used in many many ways to express ideas that the music alone can only attempt to do

I agree with you to a degree. I agree with OP in a hyperbolic way.
When lyrics are good, they do add to the experience, most definitely, but I find music that focuses on the lyrics primarily is rather dull musically. I'd rather listen to some crazy japanese chick screaming about shit I can't understand over an insane musical arrangement than listen to someone's poetry over a lazy beat.
>inb4 someone thinks I'm saying all rap is bad
Not saying that

So, to clarify, lyrics are definitely a part of music, but it's a tertiary element at best.

100% agree with your perspective, although I’d usually take the poetry. I also think lyrics are a great way to fool people into thinking a very complex or unusual composition is accessible. Probably how bands like The Mars Volta get away with their shit.

Poetry is beautiful but poetry in the 21st century is cringy because liberals have poor souls and you must be one with God to write beautiful poetry like they did in the past.

this is why i don't make songs with singing in them anymore

your mom's shit is corny. oh wait she aborted you lmao

True, people who put lyrics as the most importante aspect in music are idiots. I can't do nothing but cringe whenever someone says that the lyrics bring down a song to them. Why the fuck would you care about lyrics? You should care about all the other musical aspects about it. The only thing related to the lyrics you should care about are the melodies that it has. There's nothing more important about the lyrics than that. Who cares if the lyrics are corny or not? If it has a good melody that sticks with you that's all that matters.

I would never kill a Latina, their family would kill mine as retaliation. White women are fair game

Keep in mind most songs you hear with the same lyrics and rhymes, it gets tiring so eventually there would need to be a reason to be creative with the words you sing in a song. Either make music without any lyrics at all or learn literature to be enhanced with what possibilities you can make to even change the game.

I couldn't care less what the lyrics mean, I just care how they flow with the music.
