An honest thread. It is obvious to anyone who has been here a while that while this board fucking sucks, it is the best place for general music discussion on the internet. That said, why is the vast majority of this board so much english-oriented music. There is so much to be heard out there, and once one starts diving in, it feels so alienating to the rest. Is language barrier really that powerful to that many? Every "x best list" of whatever is 99 percent always occupied by the enlgihs language. No matter the sheer quantity of splendor across this entire fucking world. Your thoughts? Coming from a USA enlgish-native speaker

>it is the best place for general music discussion on the internet.
Yes, but not discussion of specific aspects. There are far superior niche boards discussing theory, vocal range, certain genres and rare albums.
>That said, why is the vast majority of this board so much english-oriented music.
It's an English board and most people care about understanding lyrics. I normally don't but it can be fun to sing along.

because it's harder for me to find music if I can't understand wtf I'm reading.
For example, when I found out about Jim O'Rourke it was because I was reading about Wilco on Wikipedia and his name came up. This could never happen with any foreign artists since they probably wouldn't have Wikipedia pages in English.
Doesn't mean I don't listen to some foreign music though

i mean i get that but come on man- EVERYBODY learns our language. Do you not feel compelled to look up what catharsis goes on in the rest of the world and- god forbid- google translate the unintelligible?

yeah i saw a stat recently that 50 percent about of this board is from the anglosphere- but even then, if people cared about delving intothe empathy of sound, wouldn't they care to? maybe i just hold this board in a hgiher reguard than i should after all these years. you guys are great but you still suck. not you homie, but, you know. ha haaaaaa

Polish person here, i don't particulary care about the language of music. I'm fluent in english, i speak a bit of spanish, japanese and french though over the years. There's a ton of extremely underrated non-english speaking music, even just... instrumental music you know? Honestly you need to also realize that all of those lists *are* targeting an english speaking audience, who are keen to be mostly familiar with english language music (sadly). For English speakers foreign music was always a novelty (Look at: Folkways, Lyrichord etc.) Its not even just about folk music, very few people will care about it because for most people music is about empathy and relatibility not about the "art" behind it. Its sad but that's how it is, that's why caring about it is worthless. It's just more music for yourself i'd say :/

>Is language barrier really that powerful to that many?
Americans are retarded and actually value lyrics as something important in music which is why they get filtered by foreign music.

>Do you not feel compelled to look up what catharsis goes on in the rest of the world
compelled? No not really. I mean if an artist comes up in my reading and happens to be foreign I have no issue but I definitely don't feel compelled to actually go out of my way to see what's going on out there

look at this OP
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_recorded_music_markets

it's not just language. other countries are either too poor or too already-saturated with US music to bother making their own. it's the same with movies. that will change over time of course, but it takes time.

It’s not our fault that 99% of the greatest music made is from english speaking countries.

most non-english pop music is just an imitation of american stuff anyway

this. most of my friends focus too hard on lyrics and its the first sign of faggotry

I'm from a country that makes no good music because it doesn't feed you ya know. So my theory is people in the US have the luxury to sit and pursure a music career or at least have a hobby or interest in this field while other countries don't have it. I know there are first world countries that don't speak English and you're probably talking about those but I'm not gonna delete all of this text now.

Gommenasai, but I listen to a lot of music from foreign countries, namely Japan. Pic related, it is my "selfie". As you can see, I incorporate foreign interests into my everyday life and the environment of my home. So don't be quick to assume that I'm not cultured because I'm American. When I achieve my dream of visiting Japan, they will be impressed by the depth of my cultural knowledge that I've gained from their music, anime and video games.

If non english speakers want to suddenly use this or any board there's nothing to stop them

Frankly I'd love to see the confusion/anger on /pol if even 15% was consistently a different language

& regardless if it's here or not, stuff ppl know gets bumped up. good music only 3 or 4 are aware of wont that's how it is

>oh that sounded pretty coo-
>DUDE DUDE SHHH YOU GOTTA LISTEN TO THE LYRICS JUST LISTEN BRO

lol there is a fuckton of great shit that comes from the English language. when you delve though. you find at least a notable amount of artists are from italia, mexico, tokyo, etc, france, etc. just learning our language.

and yes USA and UK etc. saturate the world with our style and shit, but come on, we can recognize shit? at least to a seminal extent it seems. we have a pretty good mentality going here better than the rest of the internet it seems (through the eilish and xcx and lipa threads etc)

this is an interesting point though. the demographics in the places lien to us available to the "catharsis" available to us

kek Ken. love u bro

cause everyone here is most likely a pasty white boy who listens to pasty white boy music. if you wanna start a thread on other genres go ahead. i've seen a few threads here or there on salsa/latin music. also /classical/ isn't always in english.

no language barrier for jeff beck
youtube.com/watch?v=xtbUcCe7rM0

Americans are extremely insular is almost impossibly for them to appreciate other countries music because they are unable to relate.

Interesting jeff buck track. Let's make this a thread for non-anlglo tracks. I'm not talking the João pessoa and Novos Baianos Гpyппa Кpoви KPOP/GOOSANDER/DADAOCHENG etc., share music from your world and show us what you mean. homies.
