Nah, he actually performs. It just doesn't seem like he does but if you've ever been to one of their concerts you can tell he's the one that puts the samples at the right time which lets Ride and Zach improvise, if he just used an unedited instrumental this wouldn't be possible.

On stage flatlander has each individual part of the song cued to an individual key ,which is queued on the 1 i think. this means he is responsible for not fucking up the entire instrumental of the song. He also does live samples, as perfectly demonstrated in the SXSW live set and well and adding reverb to Zachs snare and Rides vocals when needed.
In the studio i imagine he helps Zach find the right noise that he wants for a song and then Zach will go and make that into a song with some of Andys help, and then Andy will mix/master it
