Weird Folk

There are genres like freak folk, neofolk, gothic country, etc.

But I think there should be an umbrella term like "weird folk." For folk that has themes of occultism, ritualism, mysticism, etc.

So I am going to post examples of this weird folk genre. Anyone is free to add their own examples of what should be included. Hopefully I'll make a chart at the end.

First up is First Utterance by Comus (Now on streaming services!). Probably the best example of the genre.

Current 93 is probably also a big part of this genre.

The Inmost Light trilogy includes one of their most famous albums, All the Pretty Little Horses.

Thunder Perfect Mind by Current 93

Also one oof their biggest albums.

All of Current 93's releases could fit into this genre.

Sung Tongs by Animal Collective is also a good fit.

They have the song "Leaf House" which is apperently based off of the horror novel House of Leaves.

I also remember the song "Who Could Win a Rabbit?" was used in the horror webseries EverymanHYBRID.

Definitely Mount Eerie by the Microphones should be added.

Nico - The Marble Index

You could probably add of Nico's folky solo records.

avant-folk is already a thing, retard

Mark Melanson - The Haunted Hearse
Best folk album ever made. Unfortunately very rare and the only rip is glitchy and from a bad source. The backstory is a total mystery too, if you're into that.

>OOOOOH DAMBALA
>COME DAMBALA

It's so powerful brahs... probably one of the most soulful/sincere albums that i've ever heard.

So I used to work at a record store and I played an album by Current 93 and this guy came in and wanted to know what we were playing and when I showed him the album that was named six six six he kind of cringed and left.

I still cringe thinking about it.

But to the point there's already a genre of folk called freak folk. and i don't like it. But I do like me some C93 and DIJ.

This is pop music, idiot.

Six Organs of Admittance
Sunburned Hand of the Man
No-Neck Blues Band

Seriously, look these guys up if you want weird as fuck psych folk stuff.

Does onkyo-kei count as "weird folk?"

If not, here's a Tetsuji Akiyama album that is weird folk

Would Harley Poe count as weird folk?

Does Giles Corey count

Really different style of music but his sincerity reminds me of Blaze Foley for some reason.

Retard.

Most of the music in this thread would be considered popular music on the traditional-popular-art scale.

good thread. thanks op!

Despite being by Bruce Springsteen this album sorta fits that criteria. Very dark, minimal folk recorded in the boss's room. Not a single happy song on the whole thing. Opening track is told from the POV of the spree killer Charles Starkweather. The track State Trooper was directly inspired by the music of Suicide. Very brooding and downright evil material and its shocking that it came from one of the corniest stadium dadrockers.

Most of Springsteen's spngs are pretty sad he just masks it in the music. We all know about Born in the USA, for an easy example.

Incredible String Band
the peak of music

Daisuke Tobari - Drum
John Fahey - The Mill Pond

yeah it's called avant-folk

Yeah, loads of Springsteen's music is just like this. Born in the USA is a great example because we actually know how it originally sounded:
