omg i’m crying i want to play cynical but i love the strokes and this is so good i’m pretty emotional rn sorry

pretty terrible
first three albums are gold, angles mostly sucked, comedown machine was very underrated.
almost all songs off this new album are deeply mediocre, thinly veiled attempts at playing it safe, in hope of a commercial comeback

I don't think releasing At the Door as a lead single is exactly playing it safe but I guess I get what you mean
I mean they've had two previous albums of experimenting with their sound. I don't really mind them going back into familiar territory and releasing catchy poppy tracks again (and they're still clearly trying out some new stuff w/ At the Door)

yeah, but adults are talking is imo a new low for the band

I really like that track desu, especially the guitar solos and verses. I'll wait till the studio version comes out to reserve full judgment but so far I'm really liking all the tracks released

fuck dude, I just can't get behind the recycling of a b side verse melody (hawaii) for a chorus. one of the best things about the strokes was the hooks

Yeah this is trash. Like some of the worst tracks on Angles or Comedown Machine. The whole aesthetic of this album is confusing, I liked At the Door cuz it was basically a Voidz song and then Bad Decisions was a New Order ripoff. This is more like a shitty AOR track.

The Strokes is one of those bands people pretend to like to pretend they are into "rock".

This is weird. I like the intro and the outro, not too much the chorus. It’s fine I guess

this is awesome

Pure dogshit, the biggest one note band in history, should've disbanded when they had the chance to (i.e. 2002)

this new song sucks, but room on fire and fioe are great dude

this is fucking awful

I like it. Already listened to it 3 times. Thanks for sharing it OP.

I'm not saying that there aren't any good songs on either of those albums, just that they're completely redundant. And yeah, everything past earth is irredeemable.

Literally who?

>redundant

this is a meme criticism. it's easy to spot people who learned how to judge quality of music from "professional critics". Or fagtano.

Is This It is roughly on par w/ Angles, for what its worth.

>people only use words because e-celebs use them
you're one dumb motherfucker, no wonder you're going to bat for the strokes

>Is This It is roughly on par w/ Angles, for what its worth.
you have to go back

>b side verse melody (hawaii) for a chorus.
I haven't heard it but is this true? Hawaii is a straight rip off of the Clean's Tally Ho

I like the strokes and this track wasn't awful but i really wish there were a few more tracks because I'm not sure going on what's been released so far that this is going to have enough there

>it's easy to spot people who learned how to judge quality of music from "professional critics"
This, I hate it when people use buzzwords they learned from famous reviews.

I agree
same kind of retardation as "x should just stop making music" or "x is irrelevant"
well then if they're irrelevant fuck off then why are you bothering

Isn't it okay to call out a band for not creating anything really new in their new album if that's the case?

I'm not the arbiter of what criticism you can and can't make but I'm simply pointing out: if they're so redundant and irrelevant then why are you bothering?

Because otherwise it appears like only positive criticism is allowed.

Bing bong, we got a low iq individual here. A helpful advice: next time, maybe try squeezing out a bit more those brain juices

Maybe I am low iq
I still don't understand your issue with the actual music other than the fact it is irrelevant and the fact that you've endeavoured to comment on its irrelevance
kind of a hollow criticism

A typical Strokes song.
Utterly inconsequential song that would have been lost in the over-saturated rock market if not for the many sycophants who claim this sort of mediocrity is 'ground breaking'.

Perhaps their role in the history of modern 21st century music can be appreciated but really after decades they're still churning out the same stuff? It's pathetic

they've been in this kind of territory since angles
why are you surprised

Okay, this is gonna be my last response, but at least in good faith. The problem is that you don't seem to understand what I'm actually saying. No one in this entire reply chain has ever said that the Strokes were irrelevant. Only that their music (and by extension the band itself) was redundant. I don't know if you know this, but "irrelevant" and "redundant" are not synonyms of each other. It's completely bananas that you (or whoever else in this thread) has been conflating both of them. Maybe this is what you get when you think that people derive their vocabulary from watching youtube videos or reading pitchfork. Or maybe you're still in school, I don't know.

In reality, the problem is that the Strokes are redundant but still relevant (as opposed to irrelevant). Their music post ITI? has been nothing but a retread to the same old fucking formulas, themes, etc. yet the band still gets shoved down everyone's throats. It's just completely unnecessary, creatively bankrupt, but above all, fuckin boring.

I should have avoided taking the bait but it's genuinely breathtaking to me the amount of people that hail The Strokes as some great pioneer.
They're not even bad at all. Just indistinguishable with hundreds of contemporary rock bands.
I guess more than anything I'm crying out for a response to what people find interesting in them.

>Is This It is roughly on par w/ Angles, for what its worth.
cringe

Comedown Machine is 2nd best to Is This It
Anything else is wrong

This track's alright

Nobody is saying this is ground breaking. What a lot of people are saying is that it's a very good song.

See the problem with music criticism is this obsession with "Innovation = the most important thing". Innovation can be a good thing, but relying on that as basis for whether or not a piece of music is good is a problem. It leads to stupid opinions like "100 gecs is good music because they're unique and are the sound of muh internet culture" and whatnot. I do get it though. If you're not able to determine whether or not a song is well-written, then it makes sense that you'd immediate jump to "WELL HOW INNOVATIVE IS IT?!?!"

It really does help to know songwriting essentials, and its a shame that a lot of people on here and on sites like RYM, and even a lot of professional music critics these days, they just aren't able to do that apparently.

You both have your heads firmly lodged up your respective recta.
These are some of the most pretentious posts I have ever seen on this site. In a way I'm quite glad because I thought that everybody was too busy with poptimism to gatekeep anymore.
Nobody seriously credits the Strokes as being pioneers, at least not musically. They were incredibly fashionable at one point and thus spawned a bunch of bands similar to themselves, but that was more of a temporal thing rather than anything involving innovation musically. The Strokes have been on a similar page since Angles, however that particular place they've been in is actually grounded in variety. I don't understand the criticism that the Strokes have been making the same thing since they arrived because they simply don't. They go back to guitar pop on their records as a starting point but that's what they've always been.
The entire point of the Strokes has literally always been Julian's songwriting which has been solid since day 1. I don't know about this album yet but if we're talking about the Strokes as they've performed over Comedown Machine and Angles they've not been bad at all
>this band gets shoved down my throat
fuck off, they'd disappeared for about half a decade

As for your completely unnecessary briefing on the conflation between irrelevant it's hardly a critical point to hinge this discussion on and the projection in that response was unprecedented

this is just Virtue by The Voidz but under The Strokes name

Good post.

I love Bad Decisions but this is trash

one day the strokes may even write a decent bridge

The Cars perfected these formula in the early 80s this is kinda boring.
They were more interesting when they were ripping off Television or doing some more wacky new wave stuff like in Angles. This sounds pretty safe without the hooks to carry it. I guess all of Blanca's creative forces is on The Voidz now.

based

how has the album not leaked yet baka

Leak the album!!!

And this one is a straight rip off of I Will Survive

Seriously, how did nobody take this guys to court? they're fucking wealthy also

imagine how legendary they’d be if they broke up after is this it or room on fire

I agree with this but I love the Voidz. I see Julian Casablancas as a hostage of his generic rock musicians bandmates of the Strokes, but dude can be wildly creative and has a special talent for hooks

Ode to the Mets is probably the worst song the strokes have written for me, it's pretty boring all the way (and the duration of the track doesn't help).

I liked Bad Decisions, though

good post
bad post

why don’t you just stop hating and enjoy a legendary band releasing top tier material out of nowhere just when everybody thought they were finished?

Is a next to be rock & roll hall of fame band we are talking about here. This a band your grandchildren* will ask you about, like I used to ask my grandpa (RIP) about The Beach Boys.

I was 3 years old when Is This It, I never thought I was going to see them release a masterpiece in real time, but here we are! Exciting times, guys...

* I know most of you won’t produce descendents (thanks god) but u get the point

the strokes should be from san francisco 'cause this song is actually golden, u get it?

Why is nobody dunking on Rubin?

he's been producing straight trash since De-Loused in the Comatorium

Why is this band still relevant?

because is a great band

does anyone have a picture of julian sucking on a girls tittie or is that just a rumor?

archive.rebeccablacktech.com/mu/thread/94103295/#94103295

it's okay

lmao there's a shoutout to his wife in this song what a douche

in my case, i like their sad boi songs and i'm physically attracted to casablancas

Who did it better?

strokes viral marketing dpt strong
ny daddy money working

I disagree. RoF was the only album that felt like a total re-tread, and each subsequent album deviated from ITI more and more.
You can’t honestly say CM sounds the same as ITI
