I spent a while today working more on "alien"/sci-fi gun sounds after recently starting to pay a lot more attention to the sound design in
anime
... and idk it's just more fun for me recently
So are there any "go to" documentaries or resources for SFX artists in general? My impression has always been that it's more something you get experience and knowledge by being somebodys bitch on a movie set etc and then worming your way into that position yourself eventually, but I have no idea honestly
How do you play chords by ear? I understand trial and error for a melody, but it seems weird for chords. Do you just start with a top note and experiment with voicings?
Nathaniel Flores
Yeah find the melody line then put chords over it

1-3-5-7-9-11-13-15 and so forth....
pick a note, move three steps. then move 2 steps from the three stepped note. you now have a triad. you can start stacking additional notes using the fifths (a circle of fifths image is helpful). with only this you can create rich chords and make them more fuller-sounding
Thomas Russell
ah sorry misread your post when playing them just make sure the steps are correctly spaced. it will sound dissonant if not properly spaced, but again some chords such as tritones have dissonance on their own, and it can be used as an effect of it's own aswell
Justin Flores
That’s really cool user I think the cymbals have too much high end but the intro is fire and the little groove things are cool too gg
Carter Jenkins
will I jack the thread again?... only time will tell
make it fowl~~~~~~~ chase a chicken to a den sleep inside an egg tonight an omlet on your head mister chicken~ I know you hate Ronald McDonald farming hens in pens your idols tarred in gold
For the purpose of this advice, I'm gonna assume you're new to music. >Pick scale/mode/key >If you don't know scales use helpers >Some DAWs let you highlight notes in a scale/key/mode >When you have this set you can build chords >1 = First Note of Scale >3 = Third Note of Scale >You can form the most common chords from 1+3+5 >Keep stacking to make chord extensions >Can do all the way to 1+3+5+7+9+11+13 >You can move bottom note of chord to invert it >Usually done to smooth movement between chords >CEG becomes EGC in first inversion >CEG becomes GCE in second inversion >Change 3 in chord to a 2 for a suspended "sus2" chord >Swap a 3 for a 4 to make "sus4" chord
I recommend watching a little music theory. In fact, 8-Bit Music Theory on YouTube has a playlist of Music Theory Minute that is great.
>8-Bit Music Theory on YouTube Is he the guy that did the video on Chrono Triggers nonfunctional harmony? That was a really good video.
Asher Ortiz
That's him. He's a corny dude, but I appreciate his work and he's pretty nice from the brief interactions I've had with him. I really like his Motivic Development in Dark Souls video.
Nathaniel Wright
I like his videos I just wish I could follow along with what he says
Liam James
Sorry to repost, but I didn't get any help before. What genre is this? I've been making shit like it for awhile, but I want to see if I can be featured on some obscure playlists or something. Gotta know which ones to submit to first.
I don't follow every word, to be honest, but the more videos I've watched, the more it makes sense. Dave Conservatoire is awesome for the basics and fundamentals. He's got a really concise, but easily-followed way of teaching. 12Tone is fun for some stuff, but goddamn does that guy talk fast.

>What's your favorite /prod/ item you own? >What's been your biggest source of buyer's remorse? >What's been the thing you most regret getting rid of?
I love my MPC Live and mess with it all the time. It's still getting cool features too. Probably my biggest regret was buying a Korg Electribe Sampler. I regret getting rid of my Electrix Warpfactory Vocoder. I loved that thing.
What about you guys?
Jaxon Lee
Lol I don't have money for that kind of stuff.
Hunter Lee
>item >physical kek. a 100 dollar epiphone that i'm attached to because I can't let go of my teenage years and formative punk angst
>buyers remorse bought izotope iris 2, they routinely started putting it on sale with trash 2 for the same price within a year. I haven't bought it out of protest
I didn't "get rid of" it but my old laptop has a copy of sylenth which I never bothered to download again- that was the first and only paid synth I used for my first two years of producing
Jaxson Sanchez
>12Tone is fun for some stuff, but goddamn does that guy talk fast. yeahhhhhhhh i dont even try watching his shit, its impossible to follow. i've even tried slowing his videos down but it just didn't work for me. i personally really love sideways but his videos mostly focus more on musical concepts than music theory.
Lincoln Baker
Have you tried sending them an email?
>Hi everyone! >I'm user and I absolutely love iZotope products and I can't see myself making a song without using them, especially Iris 2 which became a staple in my sound design from the moment I bought it ago. >Unfortunately I saw that now for the same price you can get a bundle that also includes Trash 2, and I can't help but kicking myself for not waiting every time I think about it (which admittedly is a lot haha). >Is there any way I could be upgraded to the bundle, or have some sort of discount? That would make my DECADE! >Thank you so much for your attention and for making some of the most amazing plugins on the market. >Cheers!
As long as you're not asking for big ticket items, companies are usually happy to comply with requests like this. They lose a bit of money but they gain a happy (and therefore loyal) customer who's more likely to keep buying from them in the future.
Dominic Nguyen
>What's your favorite /prod/ item you own? Maschine studio. Paired with komplete I have pretty much all the synths and effects I need.
Also Roland Space Echo.
>What's been your biggest source of buyer's remorse? Buying a general midi sound bank thing recommended by a friend when I was first getting into prod. Hated everything about that module.
>What's been the thing you most regret getting rid of? Bass station rack.
Elijah King
A mate of mine was upgraded to full version of ozone as they said it was easier than fucking about with licence keys. (I think he bought the standard version thinking it included something that was only included in advanced) They seem legit at izotope. Big fan of RX7 too

i feel like such a smart boy, using the bool logic modules in vcv :) it's too bad that idk how to make music
Camden Gomez
clyp.it/njmufq1w This sound too hot right now, but I have a good feeling about it anyway.
Where's a website where I can search for and download samples
Jose Wright
>i feel like such a smart boy, using the bool logic modules in vcv :) Please elaborate? Gonna go walk my dog and load up vcv rack once home with some supply’s
i'm using a counter to limit the number of gate pulses from the arpeggiator, it stops outputting pulses after 5 counts and resets only on retrigger- this way each note only fires off a number of times when you hold it down. it's nothing special, it's just satisfying when boolean logic works
I own some handful of software with ilok licene authorization (no dongle). If I dump my recent PC, buy a new one, install Ilok, login with my account in it, install all the software I bought, will I be able to use the software? Or it is autorised to my hardware and that's it, I need to buy again to use on another new Pc?
I’m guessing you can move your licence from one pc to another or they give you multiple licences. Try looking for your answer on their faq on the ilok website.
Ah nice. Clocks and counters are good fun I really should get into using them more. Shame we don’t have more of a community here for sharing vcv rack and other stuff really
>clyp.it/njmufq1w The chiptune sounds should be more prominent AFAIK and I don't really get a beat. But maybe my studio headphones are too flat. Apart from that it sounds promising.
Ryder Lewis
1. double the tempo and add some syncopation 2. Get Jay Kay to sing over it 3. ???? 4. Profit !!!

This quarantine makes me want to impulse buy stuff. Does anyone else know this feel?
>soundcloud.com/kapsaicin/sets/sunny-day First of all: reread OP's post, especially the third paragraph. After that trash your computer, burn your instruments and all music related stuff, cut off your index fingers, deafen yourself and never ever again touch anything that is even remotely related to music. If you want to make it perfect, neuter yourself to spare this reality of any offspring, you talentless waste of oxygen. I regret to even have opened your link because my ears are tainted now and I have to listen to Billie Eilish for about one hour to get this shit impression out of my ear (acoustic homeopathy ...).
