Reading the background all of them suffered from either severe drug or alcohol problems.

Sure there are many albums done or inspired while on drugs but many of them are quite mellow comparable or energetic, say Hawkwinds stuff (weed and LSD) and Mötley Crue stuff (heroin and alcohol) respectively.
Compared to those Dopethrone is just a night and day. You dont make album like this without some serious problems. But that's just my take.
