It just does. European Power Metal bands try to hard to be 'cultured', and they try to evoke a sense of glory through either a) an exaggerated rendition of some historical event or b) some fairy tail nonsense. ('they' being underweight literature students)
United States Power Metal bands on the other hand evoke a sense of glory out of thin air. It's powerful because they said so and if you don't like it your a faggot. "Where is the logic in that?" you may ask. Again, because they said so. ('they' being some musclebound chads who crush puss and dress however they want)

This is speaking generally of course, from a Brit stuck in between this one-sided 'debate'. EUPM is great for RPG games and LOTR-style movies. USPM is great for driving, partying, working out, manual labour, and pretty much any informal activity under the sun

I feel like EUPM missed out on the chance to explore a rougher sound. Things like early Blind Guardian are a far cry from the frilly over the top music that we usually associate with the European scene.

Cringe. Rhapsody is from Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy, they live in an open-air museum, which is what inspires their music. It's USPM that lives in fantasyland having to dream up Dungeons and Dragons scenarios. Europower either takes from its environment or eschews that entirely. Neither are mutually exclusive but Europower is more like melodic speed metal while USPM is beefed up heavy metal.

I'll agree with you there, which is why I love it. I would love USPM too desu but honestly the "fanbase" (if you can call the online shitheads that) completely puts me off it. Every time I want to put on Manilla Road I remember them and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth so I double down on Europower.

American: Attacker, Liege Lord - Master Control, Manilla Raod - the deluge
Battle at Helms Deep is my favourite PM album

As for European I like a few Helloween & Blind Guardian songs (unironically) but I've always been put off by most other bands so haven't explored full albums. And for the handful of songs I like from the two bands I've listed I've heard more that I didn't like

I used to actually not understand the point of guitar solos when I first heard them in radio rock, I didn't understand what the point of all that worthless squealing and noise was. Now I appreciate music a lot more if it has actual shredding in it, especially sweeps. Wintersun solos, for example.
