theory is mostly a communication tool used between musicians. it's giving a name to common patterns in music. does knowing what a "refusal of the call" is help you understand star wars better? i dunno. i suppose theory is worth learning just for the story analogy to really make sense. there's tension, a climax and a return back home. otherwise it's a collection of names for common things.

I'm of the opinion that you don't need to learn music theory in the traditional sense. Learn at your own pace, music theory comes naturally. At least it did for me.

But I would recommend traditional learning if you want to learn more advanced stuff like uncommon time signatures, production, complicated rhythms, etc.

I learnt to play guitar without theory but after a year or so I think you should be naturally gravitating towards it

The real answer is just start learning how to play chords and scales and the rest will come naturally. Theory is just music that sounds good and the more you play the more you’ll intuitively know what sounds good
