Talk about jazz and/or how much practice you're getting done.
What have you been listening to? What'd you think of it?
What is hard bop's logical conclusion?
Favourite fusion record?

I've listened to a lot of Sonny Rollins over the years, and I've come to the conclusion that I just don't really like him. He's a very decent ballad player, when he's basically channelling Bean, but on up-tempo numbers I find his soloing mostly unpleasant - simply not tuneful enough. Many times he just seems to run out of ideas but keeps going at it regardless, it gets hard to listen to.
I know I'll get some flak for this, but I find him pretty overrated.
pretty pissed about not seeing Brad Meldhau but whatever. been relistening to some albums since I can't gout, the most recent being pic related. volumes from this collection are sometimes hard to get but it's good quality recordings (it was radio broadcatsed) and always top notch musicians
as for Sonny Rollins, yesterday I listened again to East Broadway run down, pretty underated record of his
>simply not tuneful enough
Obviously depends on the tune in question (anyone with a discog as large as his is bound to have recorded a few duds) but on the whole I'm inclined to disagree.
He's pretty well regarded as one of the pioneers of motivic improvisation and even in entirely improvised settings as on Blue 7, he's pretty great at crafting incredibly well paced and inventive improvisations built off thematic material. Whether he does so well is a matter of personal taste of course, but I think it's unfair to say his solos lack melodic content when they're often built out of strong melodic ideas as vehicles for variations/jumping off points.
I guess hard-bop's logical conclusion is really post-bop
I've been listening to a lot of 80's Wynton Marsalis lately and I think those albums are pretty underrated and anyone who digs Miles' second great quintet should check them out
also here's Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1982 with Wynton and Branford Marsalis

>also here's Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1982 with Wynton and Branford Marsalis
It's almost shameful how hard Wynton worked to get a good pedigree. He's like a show dog.
cant decide if i like JJ or Curtis Fuller more
Jazzlet here. Would it be more accurate to describe this as a rock album despite using instrumentation commonly found in jazz?
Listened to my vinyl copy of this earlier. Honestly sometimes I think I like Dolphy best in these straight ahead type settings more than the freer stuff he did later.
Jay Jay rocks
listening to this right now, I'm liking it a lot so far, it's more sparse than I thought it'd be tho
It's raining and the streets are desert. The world outside is covered in complete quietude. What's a good album for this context?
I like to listen to this on such melancholy, slightly eerie occasions
just skip the last track, idk why it's even there
Does Chris know that's the lick he keeps quoting with spiritual reverence when rounding off all these phrases? Is Chris Potter too old to know this is a meme?

You should pretend you're Sonny Rollins every day
what if I don't like to pretend I'm 90 years old ?
He knows about the lick
>just skip the last track, idk why it's even there
Yeah, it's baffling. It's a completely different group/recording session from everything else but even if it was in a context it'd make sense in, it'd still be shit. There's a pretty garbage version of Blue Xmas that came out of the same session:

nah
I think it's pretty clearly more of a jazz album than a rock album, just with a slightly ironic post-modern twist

What does /jazz/ think about the new Shabaka and The Ancestors album?
I personally love it, though I wouldn't call it better than their first.
This looks nice.
I already got memed into listening to two mediocre shabaka albums after they were hyped up by pitchfork and the melon
not gonna fall for it a third time
now that's an ugly cover
>reads pitchfork and follows the melon
>good taste
pick one
I like it OK, but I was hoping for better desu and I like all of Shabaka's groups - it really hasn't gripped me that much
I grew out of melon fortunately and I never read pitchfork, just hung out in places where most people have pitchforky tastes (like Yas Forums)
One of these days I'm gonna do an ECM marathon and then blow my brains off.
Jazz?

Players who are comfortable with playing “out” can often have the coolest solos when playing “in” and players who are comfortable playing “in” are usually the best at playing “out” too.
I've always really liked a contrast of "out" and "in" - the more contrast the juicier
Like on Albert Ayler's New Grass - I really love the final solo on the otherwise straight r&b New Generation

also Sonny Sharrock's freak-out on Herbie Mann's Hold On, I'm Coming ranks highly on my favorite guitar solos

listening to Bitches Brew
the first jazz album I really fell in love with way back in 1996
the album will be 50 on March 30 and it's pretty wild to think that it's almost been as long from when I first heard it than it was from release to me discovering it

Didn’t do much for me

not sure what I think about Matt Mitchell
I've been a fan of Tim Berne for years and most familiar with Matt Mitchell as a member of Berne's Snakeoil -group
he has to be a capable dude to hang with Berne for years, but compared to Craig Taborn who used to be Berne's keyboard guy before, I really haven't found him too remarkable in any other context
there's a brand new Snakeoil album out that's been mostly ignored now that they're apparently no longer with ECM, so I recommend checking that one out
there's a new Fire Orchestra release out that has been mostly ignored for some reason
A new take on Krzysztof Pendereckis Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra
Neat, thanks mang!
Probably because Fire Orchestra isn’t very good
I've never given jazz a full study despite having gone to Berklee for 6 weeks for jazz piano comp.
My favorite 5 albums (basic shit) are:
>Kind of Blue
>Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
>A Love Supreme
>Nighthawks at the Diner
>Headhunters
what else should I listen to?
Pic related is pretty great as an intro.
Their albums have been on a downward trend since their debut. I'll probs get around to it eventually but I'm not in any hurry.
dave holland on your stepped out of a dream blows me away every time. What a kickass record
