What is some prog metal that doesn't sound like the typical 90's prog metal? You'd expect prog metal to just sound like prog rock with metallic riffs and an overall heavy sound, but that usually isn't the case. I don't know how to adequately explain it.

TOO similar. A couple of the riffs can be easily confused for one another, most of the vocals use the "belt the lyrics out three syllables at a time" gimmick. It's still good overall but there's definitely filler on here. Bestial Devastation did it better.

It makes the album considerably weaker if there isn't much diversity and you are unable to distinguish each track from another.

These are a couple of examples of progressive song style applied to metal. The point of prog is to expand away from the typical rock verse/chorus song structure. So unless you're talking about something like WASP or Motorhead, metal generally achieves this. Linear, progressive composition is integral to extreme metal. If you must specify that your metal is progressive, what you have indicated is that the gimmicky, instrumental goof off elements have been elevated to Dream Theater levels of s o y.
