Punk imploded on itself the same year it became a thing. Turns out that a culture of cynicism and self destruction doesn't really have staying power, although it had the merit of shaking the British bourgeois establishment in a way that even '68 didn't.
Now post-punk and new wave actually endured. Some bands responded to the lack of purpose and direction by becoming militant, some wallowed in self pity and gave a voice to depressed teens, what stands is that none of that existed as a unified culture.
Punk isn't about being edgy, nor is it about being political, nor is it about being anti-estabilshment. Punk was birn because lrdinary people, and especially young people, were wary of authorities, society, and the world, and reached such levels of skepticism that the only value left to embrace was cynicism
