no. my friends (class of '05) were punks and skaters and played in garage bands and a lot still do- none of us would've been caught DEAD listening to Slipknot or Limp Bizkit but Toxicity and Steal This Album got played a good bit. I don't remember anyone culturally relevant putting SoaD in that group at all. Limp Bizkit was already an embarrassment when everyone was yelling gibberish to Chop Suey for the first time.

Slipknot I think is lumped with nu metal and a lot of those bands because of timing desu and probably would have happened regardless of whatever pop music context they were formed under.

the question isn't whether the consensus 20 years after the fact is that they were nu metal- I don't contest that in hindsight it makes sense- but the point is that they weren't viewed culturally in the same company as bands like Limp Bizkit and Slipknot or even Coal Chamber and Orgy and all the other cringey bands no one ever mentions. Those bands weren't cool and as far as I saw- only alternative rock stations, edgelord mall goths and their fat/anorexic girlfriends, and stereotypical "Kyle" type dudes listened to those bands. You would hear Needles and Chop Suey at the skatepark, not fucking "Rollin' rollin' rollin' rollin" lol.

This. Everyone loved SOAD. They weren't even really in the same era of popularity as Korn/LB, whose popularity had already waned by 03-05 when SOAD were really loved.

SoAd is just as old as Korn and Limp Bizkit.
They toured with nu metal bands in that era.
Sure their popularity came later but they came out of that same scene as the big nu metal bands did.
Thats why people connect them to it.

Yeah, SOAD is placed along with NuMetal bands but they remind me more of Soundgarden (Serj was a close friend of CC) and RATM (Again, Serj worked with Morello)
