It sounds like she's singing the song in an empty amphitheater. As far of her 80's albums I've only heard 2 so far. Every time I listen to her I just imagine her banging David Gilmore at 16.

alternative tunings are not that necessary unless you want to do kinda advanced tapping stuff (think daijiro nakagawa or yvette young)
mostly just learn some intervals and chords inversions

these vids are pretty good to understand some basic chord progressions that bands like jyocho/chon use, change the time signatures and you're already good for basic math rock-ish stuff

what sort of music do you intend to play with it? Is it how it reacts to the amp? perhaps their amp was set up badly for it (i.e. too much bass, too much bass going in).
I like the BKP mule neck which is reasonably clear, but it might not be a match for the distortion because it's a low wind PAF.
Also, before spending any money, try lowering the pickup and then raising the pole pieces. Humbuckers usually sound a bit 'clearer' if you do that.

BB Kings es-355 looks like a normal sized guitar on him. So to play proper jazz you have to weigh 300+ lbs and have a massive semi hollow.
