>Big Four of thrash is Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax
>Big Four of grunge is Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, AIC
Regardless of what you think of any of these bands, they are without a doubt and without competition the "big three" of American hard rock. The question remains, who is the fourth?
Big Four of thrash is Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax

GnR
Yeah.
Led zeppelin and its not even close
>Singer with shitty nasally tone
>two good songs in entire catalogue
>band didn't even last 10 years
>only 1 member with talent (slash)
Yea no
Anthrax and PJ are both shit bands
Quality has nothing to do with being in a 'big 4'
>Led Zeppelin
>American
what’s the big 4 of nu metal
Well the big 4 of hard rock shouldn't be american to begin with because British hard rock btfos it easily. Led zep, rolling stones, the who, beatles. Admit it, every album releases by those bands btfos Van Halens measely career hard
Korn
Limp Bizkit
Linkin Park
Slipknot
Mötley Crüe
Would veto both Motley and Gn'R because one was really the start of a new thing, Motley Crue was to "glam metal" as Metallica was to "thrash metal"
Gn'R by many was seen as a return to 70's attitude, but they came out in 1978....wouldn't that kind of be like considering Nickelback a contender for being an original grunge band?
You know I'd probably agree with this
would switch limp bizkit for system of a down
>but they came out in 1978
1987 is what I meant to say
Unironically Cheap Trick.
Hard Rock
>Led Zeppelin
>Black Sabbath
>Deep Purple
>Thin Lizzy
Yeah but what are the big four albums of hard rock?
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen
Back in Black
Appetite for Destruction
>Big Four of thrash is Sodom, Kreator, Destruction and Tankard
ftfy
>I don't like them so they're not big
t. retard
none of those bands are big
You can suck my big cock
No I can't
Switch out Linkin Park for Disturbed and don't listen to this dumb faggot.
Linkin Park were objectively the biggest band from the nu metal era, you literally can't take them out
These are literally just the three bands that inspired glam metal.
I'm sure it would offend you to even name the New York Dolls among these three, but whether hair metal fags like it or not, the NY Dolls were one of the biggest influences on both Aerosmith and KISS.
Aerosmith and Van Halen are incredible rock bands. KISS is not.
Give me:
MC5
The Stooges
Alice Cooper
Blue Cheer
Jimi Hendrix
Mountain
Does every genre have a big four? Are there no “big threes” or “big fives”
This I thought the same. Or Fleetwood Mac.
>That's a sun retard Yas Forums edition
clown, kiss played with NYD when they were Wicked Lester. Their biggest influence is probably the Faces.
don't forget Humble Pie!
KISS has admitted a number of times that the Dolls were a huge influence on them. The fact they played with them doesn't mean anything - the Ramones have played with Iggy Pop, so what?
Eh, the "big four" thing works with Thrash and Grunge because they were THE big bands of their genre/era/scene. Like with Punk there is Ramones, Sex Pistols and The Clash but there's not really a definite fourth band that belongs there. Sure you could name TONS of potential fourth bands like The Stooges, The Damned, Dead Boys, Johnny Thunders etc... but not one is on the level those other three are.
I have trouble seeing the comparison, since Rod Stewart and Steve Marriott are both incredible vocalists, and nobody in KISS can fucking sing. I just have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
This. WTF does Van Halen have to do with Aerosmith? They debuted like eight years apart and sound massively different. At least the big four of Thrash, Grunge and Punk all had their albums come out at roughly the same time.
when the WL project gave way to what became KISS, Paul was eager to do something akin to latter Beatles but even more bombastic, with 2 drummers and a horn section. Ultimately he caved to the general consensus, and KISS became "two guitarists with a guy wailing over the top", an approach directly attributed to Faces and Humble Pie. Sure, they didn't sound exactly like the people who played in those bands, but that was the influence, like it or not
I sort of agree with you, but for me the next logical step would be to question the validity of those big 4's. Were Anthrax and Megadeth really on the level of Metallica and Slayer? Metallica's possibly the most commercially successful metal band of all time, and Slayer are basically the starting point for all of extreme metal. Megadeth is great, and they were big for progressive metal, technical thrash metal, and tech-death, but for most people they're just the second-string band of the guy who got kicked out of Metallica. Anthrax aren't even as big as Megadeth, and I've gotten to the point that I really like them, but they seem mostly known for being the goofy band that experimented with hip hop and had very loose connections to the NYHC scene.
Then with grunge, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam are undeniably gods of that genre. Alice in Chains had their roots in the Seattle scene, but they were basically part of the alt metal touring circuit, and were never really part of the grunge circle.
>The question remains, who is the fourth?

kys faggot
Grunge was pretty much a label for a trend of that time because that's what those fuckheads at record labels liked to do (like pop punk in early 00's) and, unlike grunge, Hard Rock is a legit genre therefore more broad across time.
I definitely get where you're coming from, but all of those Grunge bands were from the same scene/location. The Big 4 of Thrash were mostly from the same area (Anthrax was from New York, but still played shows with the other 3 early on and are also easily the outlier of that group)
Yes, Hard Rock stylistically is an ACTUAL legitimate genre unlike Grunge (Thrash IS a legitimate genre as well though) but I would argue the similarities between Aerosmith, Kiss and Van Halen are about as blurred as the similarties between Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam.
Linkin Park isn't even nu-metal
Again, that's because Hard rock goes beyond a particular period of time in music. OP's even goes further by requesting Americans only. With Grunge it's pretty much Alternative rock with each band's sound being the their differentiation.
Korn
Limp Bizkit
Slipknot
Fear Factory or Static-X
>beatles
>hard rock
They were on the first two albums
You're not understanding what hard rock is. NY Dolls if you had to put them into a pocket, are a punk rock band more than anything.
MC5, Stooges, more garage rock. Etc. Alice Cooper works as a hard rock band, but even then some of his most well known stuff is all over the place, surprised I haven't seen him mentioned more ITT.

just fucking shut up
Imagine being a KISS fan and thinking you have a valid opinion about anything lmao
Shoegaze has a big 3
This. Sebastian Bach's story was right, Kiss are fucking faggots and posers of the worst caliber, Ace and Paul Stantey are cool though.
and mathcore
Just because Chester sometimes screams doesn't make them nu-metal. They're a rock band. Korn, Slipknot, System of a Down, Coal Chamber and Fear Factory are nu-METAL. Show me a LP song that is actually "heavy".
>Just because Chester sometimes screams doesn't make them nu-metal. They're a rock band.
>Says LP isn't NuMetal
>Their main trait is 100% NuMetal before falling for the "trying to ape out of U2" trend
>Just because Chester sometimes screams doesn't make them nu-metal.
The fact that they have a DJ and a dedicated rapper is what makes them nu metal, retard.
>This. Sebastian Bach's story was right
I know Sebastian Bach personally, and even if I didn't everybody knows he's the biggest KISS geek on the planet. Sounds like you're the poseur who has no clue what he's talking about, ya fucking Rolling Stone Magazine jerkoff fag pretending to be a rocker online.
Kill yourself, KISSfag
I don't think YOU understand what hard rock is, actually.
When the New York Dolls were in their prime, punk didn't exist yet. The Dolls were as big an influence on glam metal as they were on punk, and their most direct punk followers, The Dictators, were as hard rock as they were punk. Two of the members of the Dictators went on to form Manowar and join Twisted Sister.
Dividing the garage rock and hard rock genres with those bands is absurd. In the mid 60s, garage rock was something separate. By the late 60s, they were practically inseparable. MC5 are as hard rock as anyone, and the MC5, The Stooges, Alice Cooper, Death (the 70s band), and Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes were all in the same scene, playing together. Lemmy from Motörhead even said the MC5 were what Motörhead aspired to be like.
They're a nu metal band because they copied Korn's songwriting formula, just made it more poppy and added electronic drums and wiki wikis
Guns n Roses fit the buttrock bill
Further, tell me this isn't hard rock, you stupid faggot:
youtube.com
Fine, since we're entering hair splitting territory about genres that aren't all that well defined as no genre was all that well defined in the 70's, I'll just have to say this.
Much like Exodus is nowhere near as big as Metallica, The MC5 are nowhere near as big as Aerosmith. So they can't make the cut anyway. Ted Nugent might.
Die you coastie hipster scumbag. Go suck more dick in Sanfran or the village, you do not listen to rock music, stop pretending.
I love rock music, that's why I know KISS is garbage. Kill yourself, tasteless boomer faggot.
Show me a nu-metal LP song.
You don't love rock music, your idea of "rock" includes the word "post". You are NOT a rocker.
There's a KISS fan in this thread and somehow you still manage to be the dumbest person in the thread. I know nu metal has a sketchy definition but how can anyone deny that Linkin Park was nu metal?

>"rocker"
Lmao kill yourself
Kekking at the guy who listens to Tame Impala and Imagine Dragons and thinks he qualifies as a "rock fan"
>good musicians fell for a marketing scheme
What point are you trying to prove here?
>fucking Rolling Stone Magazine jerkoff fag pretending to be a rocker online.
Ironically the typical the Rolling stone faggot like you likes Kiss and calls it a metal band. They're hardly rock imo.
