Yas Forums I need some advice, I found a thought experiment a couple weeks ago that has bothered the fuck out of me, the idea is that if a new universe is created after every decision than if you tried shooting yourself there will be two universes, one where the gun jammed and one where you die and since in one universe you are dead you can only experience the one where you survive so I'm fucking immortal. But the problem is that I'm terrified of immortality, I don't want to live forever and I can't kill myself so what the fuck do I do? I've even tested this before, I ran out in the middle of a busy highway about 10 times and not once did I get hit, I even put a plastic bag over my head but there was a hole in the bag, what the hell do I do

Be safe user. Just focus on healing rather than giving up. I know it sounds impossible but its doable.
I also liked Alan Wake.
So you're immortal? Have you tried breathing underwater yet?
I can try but I'm pretty sure that for whatever I'll survive
The problem with this theory is, who defines what constutes a 'decision' worthy of universes splitting?
If it is a conscious decision by you, the player, then in your example the gun cannot jam. Instead in one universe you go through with it and die, in the other you pussy out. So no more free will I guess.
If other factors can make 'universes split', who is to say that there arent an uncountable number of universes diverging any planck length of time? In your example yes in (according to probability) some universes the gun jams, in others it explodes, in others a pink elephant falls on your trailerpark home killing you anyway.
You get what I am sayin?
I'd say that every single small decision creates a new universe so yeah, an elephant could jump on my trailer or a baboon rapes me or the gun jams but the point is that I'm still alive in one universe so that's what I have to experience
>since in one universe you are dead you can only experience the one where you survive
This part is nonsense. There's nothing special about the "human experience", in one universe you survive, in the other your head fucking explodes and you cease to exist. Your consciousness doesn't "transfer" or whatever. It's trying to use the idea that "you've survived until now" and extrapolating that to mean "that means in this universe in particular you live forever".
Jump off a 500ft tall building and see what your theory is all about
there would be a universe where people are moving a big air bag on the street.
That's not part of the problem, and the many-worlds hypothesis is exactly that. Literally every possible "decision", from radioactive decay at any one time to a blade of grass in kansas having a different photon quantum-tunneling effect of photosynthesis building all the way up to somebody blinking en extra time to a turtle in Florida turning left instead of right. Basically every possibility since existence began occurs, and its split up into different universes. So unfathomable numbers of universes are created at all times (or exist currently? Depends on if you view time as something progressing in one direction or whatever).
Immortal doesn't mean invisible I would probably break bone in my body and survive just barely so no
Wait, so you are not here to fap to traps?
You missed the point. You say every small decision creates a new universe but what is a "decision" defined as? The problem is that no matter how you try to define it there is always another layer of complexity below it all the way down until you are defining "decisions" as possible quantum states in quarks (and anything smaller we haven't discovered yet) and if that is the case that means there is a new universe created for every particle at every point in time making the entire theory meaningless.
We are on the same page, probably also read much of the same material on this. But, who is to say you are ONE consciousness, moving on if a 'decision' lead to physical death? Maybe you are several, or you are one that is 'spread out' over all the universes where you didn't end up dead that 'second'. What follows is that in some universes you sure are the supreme leader and having a lot of fun, in others maybe you are 'god'. So why ponder it in regards to suicide?
Dude, you’re in my universe so you can kill yourself here, problem solved.
>means there is a new universe created for every particle at every point in time making the entire theory meaningless.
Whats meaningless? That's exactly what the hypothesis is saying
There is no universe splitting you idiot. If you die you die.
Look at quantum immortality
That's the point user, there are infinite universes where the differences could be small as an electron being a inch to the right of where is in our universe or as big as the universe being made of cum and swiss cheese
I mean, by this theory, you are technically immortal, but only in chance. You will eventually die, there is simply no way you can't as the universe will cease to exist. Also keep in mind that the chances of you existing forever are so infinitecimally low, it's hard to comprehend. If you were really in your "immortal version", everytime you would try to kill yourself, your chances of survival would keep and keep dropping. You would need to be insanely lucky to pull of even one of certain suicides. For example, let's say you tie a heavy weight to your leg and jump into an ocean. There may be some way for you to survive, without wanting to, but that chance is one in a quadrillion or some other large number. Do that mroe times and your chances of being the "immortal version" become so miniscule, it's not even worth mentioning. The chances are so small, it's not even worth thinking about, as it will pretty much certainly not happen.
Tl;dr if the theory is true, the chances of you being immortal are one in infinity.
This dude gets it.
How do you find quantum immortality more likely than an afterlife? You aren't immortal, you just havent died yet, your brain is a little messed up and is changing YOUR perception and your reality. Its 100% believable to you because you have no other choice to believe it because your brain made it YOUR reality.
Your brain is just slightly messed up.
1. Hook gun up to computer servo
2. Hook servo up to S&P 500 ticker
3. If S&P down, servo squeezes trigger
4. Die in all universes where your investment goes down
5. ???
6. Profit
OP did say that it was a "thought experiment," meaning for you to ponder and think about.
The purpose of a thought experiment is not to take it as truth, but rather to play with your cognition and have an entertaining, yet deeply introspective time.
Hope that helped user, cheers!
That's the point though, I die in the universe were I die and survive in the other so I'm always alive
based
You're not immortal. You're aging day by day, and one day you will die. Its just not your time to go yet. also all your "experiments" have been shitty attempts. Plastic bags have that hole in them for safety and people in the cars will see you and intentionally try to avoid hitting you. Just simply live life and if you wanna die, kill yourself in a more direct way that involves no chance for screw ups. Jump from a stupidly high distance, lock your arms in several metal chains and throw yourself into a river. There are tons of fool proof ways to die, but testing them is kinda retarded unless you actually want to kill yourself. Just don't worry about this pointless shit and enjoy your life.
>and since in one universe you are dead you can only experience the one where you survive
you dont experience it, a different version of you does, this is not immortality, its like saying because you've only killed one of a triplet they arent fully dead.
user I'm a good 99.99% percent sure I'm not crazy
It also doesn't mean you ignore reality and the known laws that govern it or else it becomes useless mental masturbation.
You may be immortal but you'll always get weaker, in the "end" you'll be on deathsdoor till ai can fully repair you. I hope you're ready for the countless centuries of being on the brink of death.
But they are me, one me dies but the other survives so I am always alive no matter what
