The problem is that for decades the US has been picking on dirt poor brown countries who had no chance of fighting back.

A war with 2 major nuclear powers makes no profit so will not happen.

I'm sure that's what people said before WWII as well. But you know what happened before WWII? The Depression- no economy means you have no economy to lose.

We are heading directly towards another depression, even before COVID.

China has also been sending warshps out to Taiwan since American boats have been downed due to COVID, as result a naval group was sent out there just a few days ago. China has been making artificial islands to falsely claim territory in international waters and shipping lanes. They have been encroaching on Africa in the modern day colonialism boom of Africa, buying up mining contracts of rare minerals and metals(one of which being used to make batteries, of which China already owns most of the world's deposits naturally domestically). Creating infrastructure across Africa to exploit said resources.

As for the assumption itself in regards to the West and China not going to war because of economic ties is again misguided.

If the assumption was that only the west would not start war, it would be slightly more plausible. But we can see from at least a few world leaders that they are ramping up the rhetoric to get westerners in line or at least prepared for further hostile actions, to/from China.

China however can deal with the economic pain because of the level of control they have on their people and their indoctrination to the state. Which in turn allows the chinese government to put stresses onto their people that western governments would not be able to do without widespread unrest. At this point where westerners would begin to revolt, the Chinese just ramp up their already existing social controls to unite their people further against their external enemy "causing all their problems."(In their current media it is Imperial japan, capitalist USA, etc)

Picking a fight with China is one of Trump's possible deflection strategies, but not the first. The cultural war against coastal liberal elites is less dangerous, and less complex, so that's where his focus will be. The rest of the world isn't interested in war with China anyway.
