I remember this guy being on some TV show.

This happens to a lot of lottery winners because they're unprepared for the lifestyle change. They give away huge sums to friends, family and charities. They buy houses and expensive cars with zero regard to property taxes, maintenance or upkeep costs. Then they have that sobering moment where the bank says "No, you're broke. Party's over."

If I ever won the lotto, first thing I'd do is phone my lawyer. Many states still allow shell corporations to claim lotto winnings and by doing so, you can't be photographed. A lot of groups who pool their money to buy lotto tickets do this. Next thing is to hire an accountant. Make sure all of my debts are paid including loans, credit cards, vehicles and mortgage as well as any money owed to Uncle Sam. Have them set up separate trust funds and emergency funds in case of major fuckups. When friends, family and charities inevitably show up with their hands out, have a reasonable but SET amount to give them (say $10,000). If they try to guilt trip me into giving more, tell them to apply at their bank for a loan. (And NEVER co-sign someone else's loan.)
