I never finished catcher in the rye
I never finished catcher in the rye
He goes to his sister's school and finds graffiti that says "fuck you" on the wall. Then he scratches it out. The only time the F-word is used.
"What are you reading?"
"Goddam book!"
-catcher in the rye
can you tell me where the ducks go, in the winter???
Really overrated book. But it does seem to inspire murders so that's cool.
You didn't miss much. South Park was right about it being terrible.
It’s a coming do age tale about a boy who struggles to come to terms with adult themes such as sexuality, the loss of innocence and conforming to societal norms. Mid 1900s New York is a miserable place for Holden as he try’s to come to terms with his adolescence and the loss of his younger brother to leukaemia devastated Holden; he never really got over it and he still idolizes his younger brother as the epitome of childhood innocence and virtue. The book ends with Holden in a psych ward talking to a psychiatrist about his troubles.
It’s been like 7 years since I’ve read that book but I’ll never forget it
how many of you guys think a film adaption would be interesting?
>in b4 hurr it'll be a film about nothing
seinfeld was tv show about nothing and did pretty good
or you rather see dune?
Nah, the novel is about alienation. So ppl who feel alienated from society...it resonates with them.
It's not even the first of its kind...20 yrs earlier in France Louis-Ferdinand Céline published •Journey to the End of the Night•...Bardamu is the antihero...Holden Caulfield is a damn ripoff.
Then 1933 Henry Miller did •Tropic of Cancer•.
So J.D. Salinger was 20 yrs behind, but even so, the book is gr8.
It appeals to outcasts and misfits. It’s an angsty tale and philosophical enough to strike a chord with deviants
It sucks. Don’t waste your time.
Pretentious Bull Shit
Crappy book some pretentious Assholes make a big deal about.
We are getting a dune movie
remember family guy doing a good job at making hucklberry,of mice and men, gatsby all look stupid
isn't the whole point of those shows making adult life look cringe as fuck
Salinger would hate the idea probably, but I would support it. I like catcher in the rye and I consider it a timeless tale. It’s in the same category as hamlet, perks of being a wallflower, flowers for algerbon, etc.
A lot of those books/ plays got movies so why not catcher?
>perks of being a wallflower
tbh i was cringing internally during the film but the story is obviously good
I never said I didn't like it, I just don't think its one of the best books ever written. I only had a handful of friends at school and got into fights almost daily because of how I looked. So it's not like I couldn't relate, I just don't think it's as amazing as it's made out to be.
Lol this is the hardest criticism I have defending against for this book. I suppose it can come off as pretentious to someone who never experienced being “different” as such a person could never and is unwilling to empathize with Holden’s plight. Same goes for hamlet. I don’t know, I suppose you have to have been bullied or just “weird” to like the book. It’s a noticeable trend that most bookworms are outcasts who seek solace in books imstead
Why didn’t you like it? I’ve heard people critique the writing or the pace of the story. I liked these things but they’re valid reasons to dislike the book
maybe that's what so fascinating about it. some people can't even appreciate it
The film made me cringe too. One of my favourite childhood books ever made into that movie ugh
Chbosky is still a great author though, and Charlie is so loveable in the book that perks will always be a book on my bookshelf
I was bullied and I hated the main character and his wining. Just fucking suck it up and do something. Either leave school or go to the military.
>wining
Whining
Like I said, I didn't hate it. But I definitely felt it had huge lulls in it, and it took me forever to get though when usually I read very fast if I find something engaging. It gets lauded as one of the best but I just don't see it.
I think you have a mental toughness that most adolescents don’t have until later in life.
Agreed, it’s a slow book. You probably have a rpeference for a different genre... have you read American psycho, similar themes but a much more entertaining story with more action
I wish I could figure out what this image is so I don't end up calling to it and regretting it when I find out what it is...
I loved American Psycho. Working my way through Glamorama right now, I plan to get to everything Ellis has done.
My favorite authors are probably Aldous Huxley and Philip K Dick. Maybe Ann Quin if she had written more. I like Dostoevsky a lot as well.
This is b so Im am supposed to be a dick and call you a loser. But honestly I think you are probably correct. I don’t identify with Holden so i don’t relate to it.
spoiler, he never catches in the rye.
Lol you hesitate to call me a dick because you’re educated and you read. I hope you find a book you can relate to the same way a lot of people did for catcher. I support anyone who reads
Ohh you like dark authors. Dovstoevsky and Ellis touch on a lot of darker philosophical themes. Even though it’s not fiction you should read twilight of the idols by Nietzsche. I’m going to take aldous huxley from you
No one cares, I never even started it. No one cares about that either.
If I had to summarize the book I would say,
Holand is fuckig stupid and annoying as fuck.
He goes to his sisters house and bangs her, his mom walks in and screams and says " oh my lawd you fucked her in the eye" and that's why we say that ever since
I've read some Nietzsche but haven't gotten around to that one. I enjoy philosophy as much as fiction.
Also, I'd suggest Brave New World, After Many A Summer Dies The Swan, Point Counterpoint, and Island by Huxley
It's okay. Holden's a mentally ill, traumatized child who doesn't know what adulthood is, so he's afraid of it. It accurately captured a lot of angst and displacement attached to the specific period of time it came out in.
It's okay to dislike the book for a lot of the reasons posted, but that's not the same as valid criticism.
Salinger's other stuff is better IMO. 9 Stories is good, Franny and Zooey, Raise High The Roof Beams.
