Though I have to say, Linux for work is fine, provided you don't need any specialty software. In my experience, as long as you use generic/bottom shelf hardware, Linux distros are pretty good at figuring out where they are
My personal policy for troubleshooting software on linux is "if it doesn't work after 5 minutes, just find an alternative"
Example, trying to get Quickbooks running. If in 5 minutes I can't get WINE to cooperate, I just fire up a VM
Back in the day, when Netflix required Silverlight so Linux couldn't watch, I'd either download a straight file from Amazon, torrent the fucker, or find it elsewhere online
It's not perfect, but if you know how to drive a PC then Linux can really do whatever you need it to, but only because you're a good driver. For end users, they need everything set up exactly the way it's supposed to be, and it cannot deviate, because they have 0 ability to even diagnose what is happening (for example they can't even CTRL+ALT+DEL, but a clever sysadmin could probably write a script to allow CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the resource/process manager)
I've never had any issue using it for work related tasks, though most of my tasks are simple image edits/filters/touch ups (but I DarkRoom as well)
I'm guessing the workflow you're referring to would be something for a print shop, am I right?

theres a fuckton of shades between end-user and clever linux sysadmin. guys that have been windoze sysadmins can't get their heads around linux for exactly the reasons mentioned: It can take half a day of faffing around to get something simple to work. It's not a question of technical skill, just a severe lack of compatibility, and virtual machines/wine kinda defeat the purpose of having linux in the first place. It's definitely a piece of shit for peasants.
you cannot learn it. it puts up walls that take hours to climb. then when you climb it there's no guarantee there won't be another wall. It's a piece of crap.
Linux is for poor people because it's free. It's for hobbyists because it takes tinkering for it to work. It's just constant tinkering. If you want to actually work you want something where the OS gets out of the way.

Linux work well if you need something lightweight, beyond that you want bloated systems that are ready to open anything with a double click. I don't want to stop and sudo apt get some shit all the time.
It took me many years to realize this; and fortunately I did before I burned out.
Now when I think to myself "why are you wasting your time on this game" or "why not do something constructive instead of drinking while watching a movie at home?," I follow that thought with "Because I worked my ass off this week and I want to do something that takes little to no effort."
