Residential construction code doesn't take into account severe wind loading like taller commercial buildings and sky scrapers do. I remember watching a comparison of a house built to withstand hurricanes along side of a normal house. The normal house began to fail at 100 mph winds whereas the hurricane house stood up to 150 mph winds.

Then again, I've also watched tests of thin structural concrete dome houses which shrugged off 300 mph winds like it wasn't shit.

Currently living in tornado alley. The poor/rural areas seem to be the ones to most constantly be hit, and of course, poor people can't afford very well built houses. The wealthy usually live in areas that seldom get struck or they're made of brick/concrete/have cellars/shelters.

If your house isn't solid rock (no windows or doors), it's not going to survive a tornado. Even if the walls stand, the entire inside of the house will be a disaster zone, because the wind will shrek the windows and doors.

when i was 12 a tornado struck my grandparents village. i was there and saw it with my own eyes.
Most buildings in the village were made in the 1950s, cheap concrete and iron rods.
Needless to say no normal home was damaged in the disaster,even though every sheet metal roof flied off from the chicken coops and all the wheat fields were uprooted.
