People like you fail to understand that you get low numbers because you take precautions like lockdowns.
Do nothing and this thing will rip through your population in a couple of months, with nearly 10% of those infected in need of hospital beds.
You don't need to be a genius to understand that.
If people need to stay on average 2 weeks, you would need an average of about a million beds occupied by COVID-19 patients only, at any time.
That's a million beds on top of the ones needed for everything else.

The US healthcare capacity is not much higher -proportionally- than Italy's. Look at what happened to them.

For the US, the long tail will be long because of inconsistent measures across the country. Those resuming too early basically restart the clock if no personal protection and crowd-limiting measures are used.
On top of that, states that don't do well will cross infect those who did.
It could take ages to slow this thing down to the point it disappear by itself.

Devil's advocate here. Covid-19 was reported in late February to kill via pneumonia or exacerbation of existing health issues. If someone has cancer and covid-19 it's arguably the latter that ends them.

CDC literally doesn't have updated numbers. Multiple states on that list have 0/0/0/0/0 for all types of deaths including COVID-19. One of those states has 22,000 cases and 1,600 dead
