If you ask me, it’s mostly just because we’re edgy, and we notice one group of people getting more upset than the rest when they hear their respective slur. People who get super offended by it seem to assign a lot more meaning to it than I feel is reasonable. It’s like they think hearing “nigger” is the same as hearing “I think you’re subhuman and I think slavery was justified.” ...whereas with every other slur, it’s just the easiest, low hanging fruit type of insult to hurl at somebody in the hopes of offending them. I'm only as latently racist as the next sheltered white guy and got nothing against any of the black people I've hung out or worked with, words like nigger and faggot are just too fun since I grew up with them being taboo and offensive, so I learned to use them sparingly or not at all in real life but indulge in (somewhat) appropriate contexts while emphatically maintaining their validity as unique and disparate descriptors from their namesakes (ie, fag on a motorcycle revving for attention has no bearing on his apparent sexuality, or someone being a dumb nigger transcending any notion or implicit default assumption of race)
