hobbies are not playtoys in my opinion, they're genuine interests you have in the world at large that you don't want to/can't sustain just doing on your own. Now, there are plenty of "hobbies" which in my opinion are just consumerism incarnate, but plenty of other things that are fullfilling.

Cooking is the best hobby, bar none. Everyone needs to eat, and everyone likes eating. I thoroughly enjoy creating a meal, I get a sense of accomplishment, and I love the challenge of cooking for someone with a restriction (allergy, taste, whatever), because it means I have to be creative.

Gardening is the second most based hobby. If gardening conjures up images of little old ladies in their flower garden with wide brim hats on, you've never really gardened before. I love creating things with functionality, so I often try to grow all of my own vegetables I'll eat that season. This means big heads of lettuce, tomatoes, a shit ton of peppers (am mexican, use peppers every dish, make homemade salsa- you should try it, easy as fuck and better than anything you can buy), and squash and sweet potatoes, and my strawberry plants are going on 4 years now, just got 2 new blueberry plants. I grow everything from seed (except sweet potatoes), and there is nothing more satisfying than growing something and caring for it.

I like to process my own water samples for physical conditions and to sequence all the little friendly phytoplankton inside. I make tables of the distribution of species across the year.

A lot of my data is superfluous to what already exists for the government but I enjoy knowing all about the little micro-species and water conditions by my house. It’s super comfy to just assemble sequencing data and slowly build a record of all the friendly little micro species under the waves right outside my window. They work so hard to give us oxygen - nearly 50% of the O2 we breathe comes from ocean micros - i like to think I do them proud by using it to lift big.

I've never really had hobbies. Playing vidya isn't a hobby. I couldn't really call lifting a hobby either. My day to day life was school, netflix, vidya (rarely), lifting, or 'hanging out' with people. I'd also waste a huge amount of time watching youtube videos. Where tv or movies you have a story I'd gain nothing from youtube videos.

I'm finally starting to find other things in life to enjoy. I recently bought a guitar. Now with the quarantine it seems like the best of any time to learn. I'm even willing to pay for lessons but justin guitar seems pretty good so far and I definitely am progressing. I'm also really enjoying it so far.

Before all of this I was going to buy a motorcycle. Not really a hobby but still something. I'm still dependent on my parents (tuition) and they disapprove so it'll have to wait until I'm fully independent.

Also want to try boxing. Jiu jutsu seems very usefully but the idea of practicing it doesn't at all seem enjoyable. And with boxing I hate the idea of classes and I can't afford 1 on 1. It's whats been holding me back from starting.

Look it up on YouTube but if you want bioactive/self sustaining look into isopods. The soil layers are super important regardless. I would start small, make the jar kind first and see how they do for a few months and then upgrade to bigger ones. You can make simpler ones with fake plants and shit but live animals but that’s more maintenance. Currently building a huge 24x24x36 (roughly 60 gallons if it were an aquarium) for my geckos. It will be self sustaining with live plants and “living” soil.

Yeah 10 is a lot but I personally see no issue so long as I’m on top of everything and haven’t been lacking at all. That’s really what determines whether I’ll have them in the first place. For example I’m cutting and I won’t be having any until I’m under 15% bodyfat and haven’t had any of these days in a while. I won’t even have a single beer if I’m with friends until I feel I’m “allowed” to do so by getting my bodyfat back into a humanly acceptable range. It’s like full force productivity and when I make major progress in live/ achieve something huge I’ll make a mental note for planning one of these days. I probably won’t do them forever but it’s been working for me. It also makes the enjoyment maximum by not indulging in that degenerate shit except for those rare limited days

Look into indoor table top gardens. You can grow veggies and fruits inside, pretty easy to build with just some wood and plastic storage tubs, takes up small space

Your issue is that the things you listed give you rush of dopamine with little to no effort compared to reading, working out, etc. which can take a while to see a return on your investment of time. I can tell that you already feel that these are pleasures devoid of any substance, but they are addicting. If you accomplish something real, you won’t feel as guilty about the mindless pleasures. You weren’t doomed from the start. You’re just a zoomer. Do something productive with your life every day (baby steps) and you’ll feel better. It can literally be anything.
