You don't write firmware for those, you write controller software for the existent firmware over a port.
Example, like how do you control the volume on a class D amplifier. Technically from factory, you have a controller chip that sets the PWM value of the amplifier chip. Usually that's done through a button press or a knob. Now in your software, you find a protocol that can simulate a button press or a knob rotation and sent that command to the controller chip. That's it.
The feedback loop monitoring is harder than just percentages, that's EBU R 128 calculus for the loudness (momentary, integrated and short). For the VU's you have a 300ms logarithmic calculus and so on. For the spectrum analyzer you have to use a Blackman-Harris FFT window calculus with 16,384 bit resolution... and it goes on an on an on... and tbh I always hated math.
