One in OP is a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield. Great gun. I have it in .40, but comes in 9mm, .40, and .45 I believe.

1911 will never steer you wrong, but honestly, go to a range and rent several guns in different calibers to see what you like.

I have
M9A3 (9mm semi-auto pistol, good starter caliber for plinking and self defense. It is full size so it isn't necessarily practical for concealed carry)
Mossburg 930 SPX (12ga semi-auto shotgun, good for home defense. At 18" it isn't very good for fowl hunting, but barrels are easily swappable)
Tikka CTR (6.5cr bolt action, good round for anything from prairie dogs to deer. Elk too if you have a good shot)
Henry Model X .45-70 (big bore lever action, very large short-medium range cartridge good for elk, moose, and bear)
These are all slightly "tactical" guns. Purpose built with picatinny. They are all well praised for reliability and performance. They are all in the upper-mid range as far as price, but (with perhaps the exception of the M9) all are worth the money.

depends on what you want. full size? concealed carry? .45? 9mm?
Also depends on your price point. My first handgun was the FN509 and I couldn't be happier, but 600$ is a lot for most people on entry.
If you want a nice fullsize 9 mil, get a M&P 2.0. Cheap, reliable, good.
