Let's assume you're correct. Let's estimate the average American WILL do intensive farm labor for the right pay. Let's just spitball $15, cause that's what the left is always saying is the baseline livable wage. That's about 3x what migrant workers make for the work... So, logically, produce prices will go up about 3x, since labor is the highest overhead for a farm. Orrrr...we just buy it from over seas for cheaper. And, let's not forget the other industries staffed heavily with migrant labor, like construction, landscaping, and restaurants. And industries that are interdependent on those industries. Shits a ripple effect. Too much of our economy is based off of super cheap labor from foreign countries, it's about the only thing that has stopped our inflation outpacing our pay to the point where people can't afford food with a $25 an hour job.

There were a ton of nurseries in the area, so I started working at one. $15 an hour for a high school kid in 2000? Fat fucking money. Especially considering most of the "grown up" jobs in the area paid like $12. I did 3 Summers there, then did full time for a couple years before I graduated college. Every Summer half the white kids quit the first week, by the end of the Summer it would be me, 2-3 other white kids(out of like 20-30) and the rest of the crew was Hispanic. Only a slightly better margin on white adults.

Not laziness, meant to illustrate a point. Even if you could get American laborers to do it, and even if they only required $15 to do it (I agree that in reality it would take a lot more), it would crush our food industry. Head of lettuce costs about $1 now, would cost $3 easy if farm workers made $15 an hour. And that is a cheap as fuck food relative to other hand picked produce. Companies won't let their percentages slide, so that cost gets passed directly to the consumer. $3 a pound grapes become $9 a pound grapes overnight. The whole food system is BUILT on below minimum wage workers. If you remove them from the equation that puts a massive chunk of America's native workforce in those positions and prices everyone but a small percentage of top earners out of eating. Everyone wins if we keep migrant workers coming and treat the even halfway decent. They make more money than they would back home, and we don't have oranges selling for $5 a pound
