I am a war photographer/reporter. I work mainly in the Ukrainian conflict zone, and have had my share of close calls covering the war – but this one takes the cake.
I posted this thread the other day, but today im back with more photos and stories as requested.
I had just arrived at a FOB, when we heard the sound of a drone (DJI Phantom 4). The commander of the position made us all evacuate to the command post – a shitty soviet village house with sandbags in the windows.
Everyone piles inside, while I stayed outside with a soldier who was shooting at the drone, and the commander who was calling in the AA gun from another fob. The drone got closer till it was right above us, then the soldiers AK jammed and we all ran inside. We waiting for 10 mins, but heard nothing. Eventually, we went outside – no drone, nothing. We all had a laugh and started talking about what the drone was doing and why it didn't drop its payload (if it had one).
2 hours later we are smoking on the street and enjoying the sunset and someone looks back at the house and starts laughing. Turns out the drone did drop its payload, lodging a small bomb into the asbestos roof about 3/4 meters from where I has been standing during the attack. (PIC IN THREAD)
From my understanding, the warhead on these makeshift bombs are normally 2-3 Grenades (f1 or 40mm) or a 60mm mortar. At the time I was wearing body armor (NIJ II liner and NIJ IIIa plates), a PASGT helmet and some ballistic goggles.
If the device had gone off, what would have happened to me? Cheers bros, pic related.
P.S Posted this story a few days ago, but now im back with some more photos and stories to share.
How fucking shit scared are you when the shooting starts and you don't have a gun? (i assume you don't?) Would it be better if you were armed as well? also more crazy stories in general
Nolan Phillips
I cant have a gun, that would kinda be a warcrime. But, in the case that we get overrun, and shit really hits the fan, I know how to fend for myself. AKA: All the soldiers make sure I can carry my own... know how to use their main weapons....
A few months ago, a solider who was showing us around the frontline decided we would take a shortcut through no mans land – right between two unmarked minefield... As soon as we got into the area a sniper started taking shots as us, missing us by only a few CM. That was a pretty close call.
does the other side just not shoot you on principle or do you have to take just as much cover as everyone else?
Lucas Gomez
Im Latvian, how fucked are we going to get by Putin?
Henry Jenkins
Damn son, that's heavy. But it's good to know the soldiers you're hanging around with treat you right. I'm not a military man, but I can't imagine a soldier enjoying some dude running around during an operation, posing more risk than being just soldiers
Adrian Martin
well that came out shitty. I'm high, don't look at me like that. I meant to say that it's good that you're not treated or act as dead weight.

They repurpose commercially available options

Depends on the place. In Ukraine, I thought I was safe until I started getting show at. Generally we take the same measures, if not more.
If they shot me, the Ukrainians would return fire. They would then bomb them. And if any questions were asked about my death, they would say I died in the crossfire after the Ukrainians attacked them
Nathan Davis
fuck who's side are you with again? And what is the other side? I'm just a fat white guy I don't know slav countries i'm very sorry
Cooper Watson
I honestly dont know. Depends how the EU and Nato come out of this pandemic...
learn Russian....
Jonathan Howard
itt OP not a faggot
Zachary Baker
Some of them do. You need to earn their trust. Which normally means smoking a lot, drinking a lot of coffee, and sharing dirty jokes... and sometimes some other stuff that I cant mention as I don't want to be tried for warcrimes
Grayson Lewis
so you DO have a gun stashed in your pants.
Joseph Kelly
Dont worry mate im drunk af... I thought I had posted this to fucking /k
Lucas Phillips

I have worked on both. Russian backed separatists took over the countries east (Ukraine) the two have been fighting since.
I have only been to the other side once and they almost threw me in jail for being a western spy... It was funny once I was back in friendly territory.
Pic of me after having just made it out, feeling like shit.
Did Russia really take over Crimea or was it more like the Crimeans wanted to be Russian anyways and let it happen? Are the Ukrainian s still fighting to take back Crimea, or to halt Russian advances in gene ral?

love the flip flops Fair enough, but I guess when are fully armed, people automatically keep their distance
Russia are saying they are hardly affected, 313 deaths, Ukraine too, 133. Do you think that's a resonable assessment?
Wyatt Wilson
>G'day /K Go back faggot.
Elijah Watson
No your not, asshole. Quit larping.nigger
Michael Howard
not OP, but thems some big fat lies
Anthony Nguyen
Bit of both. Some people put up a fight, but a real small number. I don't know if the majority didn't fight because they didn't want to, or because they knew they had no chance.
Ukraine had pretty much forgotten about the east, so Russia had little convincing to do anyhow. An no, Ukraine pretty much gave up, they since they have no since against legit Russian forces. They are trying to fight them with international law instead. Obviously Russia does not give 2 fucks
