How do you switch from seeking extrinsic motivation all the time, to an intrinsic motivation mentality?

Why would a friend hide her boyfriend from me? We met at work and chat for hours on end when we get out but I just found out she's been seeing someone since January. I don't get why she would never bring him up. She's told me far more intimate things about herself that revealing that sort of information to me would seem insignificant in comparison. Trying to make sense of it.

Be there for them. It's a bitch and a half, but look into active listening to help them, where you ask open ended questions and let them do the talking. Never one up or give advice on something you don't have knowledge on. You're a friend, not a therapist though, so understand your boundaries.

Is it true that "therapists" do not require a 2-4 year degree education as physiologists do, and they do not have the authority to prescribe?

Essentially all "therapists" can do is talk to you?
