They can be shy/weird at first but once they get comfortable in a home they show off their own personalities which are often hilarious to witness. Cats have just enough intelligence to display visible egos and make their own decisions about what they want to do, but are still stupid enough to be confounded by hilariously simple shit. Plus they're incredibly easy to take care of and will show you affection if you're not a psycho. They're perfect.

Theres no doubt in my mind that the connection between a cat and human can be just as deep and meaningful as with a dog.
Dogs are herd animals. Theres a hard-coded hierarchy in their minds, in which they order themselves based on how the other pack members treat him. Dogs are only so "nice" because they are evolutionarily dependent on their pack mates approval in order to survive. This is also why they cant do anythin on their own.
This is fine and all and I love my parents dog when I visit them occasionally. But theres just something about laying on the sofa at night, worrying about stuff in your life, when suddenly you feel a fluffy tail stroke your leg. Suddenly your shy little buddy sits on your lap, who waited to have some time with you when everything got quiet. Falling asleep to cat purs is almost hypnotic.
You cant really compare them to any other pet.
