At the start of the game you can hear elenwen talking to tullius to hand ulfric over to them. Then he would have escaped under mysterious circumstances and the war would continue. The Thalmor supported Skyrim independence because it weakened imperial control. They did supply weapons to the troops in kind by the liberation of Skyrim was far from a Thalmor instigated plot. Hell, Ulfric was a veteran of Imperial campaigns. He knew better than anyone that the Thalmor had no business telling Nords which goss they could worship. It happened to coinced with Thalmor interests but Nord were killing high elves by the hundreds.

The empire only outlawed the worship of talos becuase they needed thime to rebuild their armies for the next great war with the elves. They realise that nords bretons and imperials only have a chance against the dominion if they're united. The stormcloaks are so focused on skyrim that they don't see what's at stake. The whole empire barely survied the war with the elves and now they need time to rebuild their armies ( which is why they outlawed the worship of talos, to buy time). Skyrim alone would get steamroled by the dominion in a heartbeat. Tuluis even tells you that the empire is preapring for another war with them when you progress far enough in the querstline. The thalmor wnat the stormcloaks to suceed becuase if they're succesful it weakens the race of men becuase they aren't united. The imperials relaize this. The stormcloaks are dooming all humans and there's enough evidence for that in the game.

The argonians actually performed successful raids against the deadra in the plains of fucking Oblivion during the Oblivion crisis so a handful of United nords could do anything.

But they did, though. The Dominion got its dick slapped constantly. Hell, look at their failed invasion of Morrowind. The Dominion was fucked. Unfortunately they had a weak emperor to sign the white gold concordant.

Because the Stormcloak rebellion did nothing but further weaken the races of man, giving the elves another advantage. This is proven with the Thalmor dossier found within their embassy. They supplied the Stormcloaks with weapons just to add to the chaos in Skyrim. The rebels weren't even fighting proper soldiers from the empire, just recruits who also lived in Skyrim. Not to mention the fact that the Empire is secretly plotting to start another great war as Tullius hinted at the end of the questline.

The empire lost almost all of their manpower andwould have lost had they continued fighting. The domion thought the empire much stronger than they really where. Thats why they singed the peace treaty. And every imperial knows that another is inevitable. And they also that they need cyrodil, high rock and skyrim to have only the slightest chance against the elves. The worst thing anyone could have done is dividing the empire when its the only chance for humans to not end up as elven slaves.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Argonians are not at all similar to Nords. They have the Hist telling them exactly what to do and where to go, plus they had overwhelming numbers that the Daedra couldn't handle. Not only that, but Blackmarsh in general is the most dangerous place in Tamriel because of all the nasty plagues and swamp creatures that live there.

The Nords don't have any of that. The country is divided in half because they can't agree over religious issues. The Thalmor could easily conquer Skyrim if they wanted to.
