Common cold doesn't have a vaccine because they are generally not as serious as flu and are caused by many different viruses among three different distinct virus types. It is actually feasible to make a common cold vaccine for any one of those but it isn't normally serious enough to warrant cost and effort. Plus would require a load of different vaccines.
With c19 tho we are directing efforts towards one specific virus. So is technically not that hard but it still takes time.
Talk of vaccines sooner than a year are bollocks. UK press quoting a vaccine research expert saying vaccine available by September. But if you look at the actually reality that would require the government to start manufactur as soon as the discovery is made while still no efficacy and safety data available. This time line also includes a truncated safety testing period which requires some area to allow rapid spread if the disease to get quick data. In other words let the virus run loose to get data quicker. But what government is going to allow an entire city or large town to be used as s giant experiment and what would that look like if the vaccine was ineffective or unsafe, or both.
